Sarlat-la-Canéda is one of the most beloved villages in France's Dordogne region, and one of the best views in town is from the top of the former bell tower of the Église Sainte-Marie, which today has been converted into the town's covered market.

From the top, you get a wonderful view of the Cathédrale Saint-Sacerdos rising above Sarlat's honey-colored rooftops. Originally founded as a Benedictine abbey, it became a cathedral in 1317, while its distinctive Romanesque bell tower, the oldest part of the complex, has stood here since the 12th century.

The remarkable skyline surrounding the cathedral reflects Sarlat's extraordinary wealth during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The powerful abbey generated enormous revenues from its vast estates, while the town prospered as an important trading center for prized regional products such as walnuts, w**e, truffles, and poultry.

The arrival of royal courts later attracted wealthy magistrates and merchants, who built many of the elegant stone mansions that still define the historic center today.

It's one of the best places to appreciate why Sarlat is considered one of France's finest preserved medieval towns.
