The saddest of news to be sharing

On Saturday, 4th October in the early evening, while we were all there, my lovely daddy passed away.

He fought a long battle with cancer, and suddenly out of nowhere, it switched gears and he fell ill, from what started like a cold.

The care from the nurses, our doctor and our companion carers at home was truly amazing, we couldn't have asked for more.

Dad only ever wanted to be with mum, in their beautiful home, Sengresse, and that was achieved. How wonderful.

And in the way that they have always been there for each other throughout their married life, so they were in his last week. Mum up and down the stairs to dad's room and at his side, as dad had rallied to visit mum daily in the hospital while she was ill.

They have been the most amazing team. And while life is going to look very different, we are secure in the knowledge that for the moment, Sengresse will help mum grieve, heal and celebrate his life. He is after-all, around her in everything they have built together in their beautiful home and garden. Just as they did in all the houses they rebuilt together over the years. And we have the knowledge that since mum came out of hospital they have shared a wonderful few months back together at home.

As is only fitting for dad, we toasted him, raising a glass, as he would have wanted, only a little after the "apero" hour. We know he would have approved.

With the speed at which everything happened, it was wonderful we could all be there and that geography didn't get in the way.

We will be holding a funeral for him at home in the garden at Sengresse. We had never thought of this, but it was something suggested by the funeral directors and it feels incredibly fitting for someone who preferred to keep things low key and simple (unlike mum!!!) and was always happy in the garden, with the dogs, cutting grass and doing jobs.
Although of course they’ll be a « party » afterwards because they always knew how to throw a party…
bonfire parties, children’s parties, dinner parties, supper parties, dances, balls, concerts, recitals, art exhibitions, opening up their home always and hosting! They were the ultimate double act.

As a good friend of theirs said « You’d walk a long way to meet another man like your father. »
And we would have to…. His intelligence, his integrity, his loyalty, his fun, his unwavering love & support and championing of us all but in a quiet, unassuming way. His clients gave him owls… and he truely was the wisest of owls.
There have been so many chapters and for that we can be grateful…. It’s just hard to take in that it’s all over. But one thing is for sure, he lives on in all of us.
