A door that opens as it should. Stone returned to its place. Something old repaired rather than replaced. A room ready before anyone arrives.

Behind so many of these details have been patient hands, countless hours and the quiet determination to find a way when old buildings inevitably have other ideas.

Today, Château de Montflour pauses to acknowledge the people who have given so much time, skill and care to this place.

There are transformations that photographs can capture, and there are hundreds of smaller ones they never will.

Sometimes, we forget where we started.

Until we find ourselves standing in the very same place, noticing what has changed — and, perhaps more importantly, what has remained.

At Château de Montflour, the old beams still cross overhead. The stone still holds its place. Light still finds its way through the windows.

And yet, quietly, almost everything around them has changed.

Perhaps that is why old places have a way of making us notice things we might otherwise miss.

They remind us that change does not always announce itself.

Sometimes, you simply have to stop long enough to look around — and see how far you have come.
