A big thank you to Becky Slack for organising the Holiday Cottage Owners FB Challenge which sadly has now finished - It was a really interesting challenge and I hope you all enjoyed our posts. It seems the post which ""reached the furthest was the one about where and what to eat and drink locally and there was me worrying I was mentioning wine too often and I know now you can never mention wine or food too often!!! The choice is yours whether you want to eat out or enjoy a BBQ or just have my favourite of fresh bread and cheese or saucisson with of course a good wine - when in France !!! We knew we'd picked the right country to live in !! Unfortunately due to a longstanding thyroid condition - alcohol should be limited but I don't think I'd be wrong in saying that most french people, certainly in this area don't class wine as alcohol so I'm going with that and everything in moderation!!
Thanks for liking and sharing and let us know What would be your favourite apperitif ?

Live and eat al fresco - enjoy the lovely warm evenings and make the most of your own private dining terrace. One of our favourite treats is a baked Camembert with lots of fresh french bread, followed by steak and big fresh prawns cooked on the BBQ - absolutely delicious, lunch or dinner - of course it wouldn't be complete without a glass of chilled rosé or sparkling wine with added Blackcurrant or Raspberry liqueur. My mouth is watering already and those days are just around the corner.

Both of our cottages have inside dining areas which are nice and cool too and both have had newly installed kitchens in the last 2 years providing new electric ovens, hobs, dish washer, microwave, fridge/freezer and all the china, utensils and kitchen utensils you need along with plastic plates and cutlery for the children, cool bag or box, freezer packs and BBQ utensils are also provided for your use.

Nighty Night - Sweet Dreams.

With comfortable beds and pretty bedrooms to sleep in and peace and quiet - no street lights - Chauffour is a perfect place for a good night's sleep. With no light pollution around us you can see the night sky - gaze up into the stars and see the milky way and watch the satellites cross the night sky and if you're lucky see a shooting star and lull yourself to sleepiness.

What to expect when you have a holiday at Chauffour. A lot of people when they arrive and get out the car say it looks just like the photos - we don't try to be something we're not - what you see is what you get and we'd much rather manage your expectations as there is nothing worse than arriving on holiday after a tiring journey and being disappointed. Your holiday is what you make it and as long as you have clean comfortable accommodation and surroundings then you can just concentrate on your holiday.

All you need to do when you arrive is kick of those shoes, take a couple of deep breaths and enjoy.

I was going to say open that bottle of wine or beer but I'm starting to sense a lot of references to wine and beer in these posts so wouldn't want anybody to get the wrong impression of us!!!

Did you know Malcolm is a keen cyclist and runner and is now training for the Paris Marathon - the area around is often overlooked for either the mountains or the area of the Dordogne nearer the Dordorgne river but we (biased we might be) think that this area has so much to offer and is so pretty and with very little traffic, quiet roads and off road paths make this area brilliant for running and doing trails. Malcolm is always looking for a friend to run with.

I prefer walking or a mix of both and after walking the Camino Way of St. James in Spain, I've recently been looking into the Camino ways around here and found there is a path that comes down from Paris and through Tours to Angouleme and nearby Aubeterre and St. Aulaye and also the Vézelay way also comes down through Perigueux and to St. Astier and Mussidan. We'd be happy to organise walking holiday packages that incompass some of these routes and some of the many other favourite attractions in the area. If you're a group of friends, family or walking group or cycling group and you'd like more information, then please get in touch to discuss.

There are circular routes from the doorstep which link with other circular routes so you can walk/run/cycle for miles if the mood takes you. I met a few chickens on my walk the other day.

France has always been a nation famous for it's wine and food including the good old french baguette and garlic. The Dordogne region is famous for it's controversial foie gras, figs made into fig jam or chutney, goats cheese and walnuts - the Abbey d'Echourgnac is one of many abbeys still making it's delicious walnut cheese as was done in ancient time and carries a label "monastic" :

The beautiful village of Aubeterre has many options for dining out from the café/bar on the beach or the Hostellerie du Perigord that offers high quality food for reasonable prices .

Our local village of Allemans has the brilliantly named restuarant/bar : L'Arsenic - run by two very friendly french ladies and offering traditional french food.

Our other closest village offers a brilliant Italian Restaurant and a pizza and burger bar. There are also fish and chip and pizza vans in the local areas. We'll provide details for you in our Information folder in the cottages.

To be honest I don't think I've ever had a bad meal in a french restaurant - possibly some may be better value than others but in general you get generous portions and great value especially at lunch time : the midday meal is the most important meal of the day for the french and you can still find some restaurants offering three courses for under 15€ with some offering wine included too. We provide a leaflet in our cottages that is provided by the tourist office, listing all the places to eat in the local area.

If you exhaust all the restaurants nearby you can always rely on and try a french McDonalds in Riberac.

Don't forget breakfast too and start your day with some warmed up croissants or pain au chocolat - A new bakery in Allemans will be opening soon that will also have a small café and shop and is a 3km walk through the woods and along a quiet lane from Chauffour.

Hear what other's have to say about Chauffour :

"Brilliant holiday! The accommodation (La Porcherie) is in a perfect location, quiet and beautiful! Our first holiday as a family with an autistic 4 year old and a 2 year old and it was the best holiday we've had and so easy!" Thankyou to Kelly for this review.

"We had a fantastic stay here with our three young boys (under 5) and their grandparents. The house (the Grange) was well equipped and the garden and pool were well kept and perfect for young children with the swings/slide/trampoline/table tennis and safety gate at the pool." Thanks to Michael for the review.

We have repeat bookings every year and our record is from a couple who have been here for the last 9 years in September and this year is no exception. September is a beautiful time of year to come to the Dordogne - the weather is still hot and sunny and you can enjoy the local beaches almost to yourselves. Two other separate families are also returning this year for a third time so it's great to see familiar faces again and to know we provide holidays that people want to enjoy again and again.
