This half term week has seen the Charente leapfrog from cool late Spring into hot summer scorching sunshine. Our guests have cooled off by enjoying hours of pool time, river swimming, canoeing on the Charente, picnicing and making the most of lots of precious family time. The kitchen has been busy cooking up plentiful petit déjeuners, reviving seasonal salad lunches and sumptuous sunset suppers. We finished a wonderful week off with a fabulous bbq feast last night as we watched the sun slowly dip behind the village chateau. The feline has adapted to the change in weather by spending his week sauntering from one shady spot to the next. Will and our fab friend Jerome have started to assemble the barns metal staircase after the delivery of our laser cut treads (Merci ). Exciting! Very early morning duties have been worth it to catch a glimpse of our lièvre as they graze between the ancient oaks on the driveway. Au revoir marvelous May! Bon week-end à tous! 🇫🇷 ❤️

Wow what a week…..after very long days of getting jobs ticked off the never ending to do list we enjoyed our favourite (much needed) simple, shellfish supper last night washed down with a delicious glass of wine. This week has (at long last) seen the barn advance in leaps and bounds after months of mess, dust and destruction. The first phase of the huge task of the traditional interior lime rendering is now complete and what a transformation it has made to the space. The heavy steel that will form the spine of our staircase has been lifted and fixed into place. And our wonderful friend has started fitting the bedroom mezzanine balustrade (An important safety feature due to Jasmine’s sleep walking habit)! It’s starting to look more habitable now and ready for us to move into for the summer months. The Pool Suite is inching towards completion with bed deliveries, curtains being hung and the finishing touches finally being put into place ready for its first guests next week. Eeek! We think it might be our new favourite guest room! Bon week-end à tous. 🇫🇷

An image from Paris on this very day 81 years ago when Germany unconditionally surrendered its military forces to the Allies, including the United States. On May 8, 1945 - known as Victory in Europe Day or V-E Day - celebrations erupted around the world to mark the end of World War II in Europe. ❤️

This friday in France was our celebration of May Day, Fête du Travail and la Fête du Muguet (Lily of the Valley Day) all rolled into one. A day of rest (for most!) and the historic giving of Lily of the Valley flowers to loved ones and neighbours to give luck for the changing season. An age old tradition stemming back to Knight Louis de Girard who gave Charles IX the King of France a lily of the valley sprig he had picked in his garden on the 1st of May, 1561. For us here we had a wonderful weekend of guests enjoying warm May sunshine, sunset suppers, walking in the beautiful Charentaise countryside, lunchtime oysters and Pastis and Pétanque! Even the resident feline took May Day seriously as he was found horizontal on our new outdoor lounge cushions! Bon week-end à tous! 🇫🇷

Another week has flown by in the blink of an eye! A week of beautifully warm weather, sunset aperitifs and masses of floor finishing. Our knees are aching and our fingers are shriveled due to 110m2 of floor to finish in the new Pool Suite and secondary kitchen. After a big effort the floor has finally been jointed, cleaned (numerous times) and now sealed. Another big job ticked off our long list and it looks fab! Our ancient Jacaranda Tree in the courtyard is in full bloom filling within the four walls with a heavy sweet fragrance a sign that summer is nearly here. Our final fit for the barn windows is complete. It’ll be an early morning quick trip to Angouleme to deliver them to the workshop to be treated and painted ready for fitting and glazing next week. Jasmine has spotted an envioable cheese trolley in the local antique shop but due to various worldwide reasons the price of copper has soared and so has the price tag for this wonderful thing. The search continues! Bon week-end à tous! ❤️

It’s been a week of juggling guests, renovations, deliveries, gardening, French admin and more……but the sun has shone all week so all is well. Our lovely neighbours have turned their beautiful herd of dairy cows out to pasture in our grazing field, their inquisitive nature always makes us smile as we zip past on the other side of the fence on the lawn tractor. A much anticipated delivery arrived this week in a wooden tomb shaped box. Jasmine’s big indulgence for the new Pool Suite was finally delivered and after much effing and jeffing we managed to get all 320kgs of it safely through the door! After initial resistance from the man of the house, she convinced him and the cast iron bath is here! Our lovely friend Jerome has finished the fabrication of our new barn entrance door and windows. There have been many adjustments to the drawings (mainly over a few beers) but they fit like a glove and can now be sent for painting. Suddenly we have an abundance of our favourite white asparagus which was the perfect accompaniment to BBQ seabass enjoyed alfresco last night washed down with a glass of something cold! The perfect end to a very busy week. Bon week-end à tous!

A tribute to Mum and many years of hard work and devotion to her wonderful restaurant. ‘Yesterday marked the 25th anniversary of The Anchorstone Cafe here in Dittisham!🩵 Since 2001, this beautiful spot on the River Dart has been owned and run by Clare, her wonderful family and hardworking team🫶🏼

Clare, what an amazing milestone. For 25 years you’ve poured your heart and soul into your cafe, building not just a business but a place filled with warmth, memories and a community.

You’ve done all of this alongside your family, your daughter Jasmine and her husband Will. Who 6 years ago moved to France to begin their own venture in Verteuil-sur-Charente, the love they have for this place and you will never change.

Together you have done so much over the years, starting with Dittisham, then the picnic boat, to the cafe at Sharpham and lastly the Anchorstone in the park in Dartmouth.

All of our favourite memories here, are about you Clare. Whether that’s watching you dance in the kitchen, learning French with Alexa or just seeing you smile with a slice of cake and a cup of tea.

And to some other important people in your life, a big thanks to your Michael for being on stand by when times get hard. Dotty, and all of your dogs throughout the years, we all look forward to seeing their wagging tails at the end of our shift.
Buddy and the family, for their on going love and support behind the scenes! And to your loved ones that aren’t here to celebrate in person today, your parents would each be so utterly proud of what you have achieved up until this day.

Here’s to everything you’ve achieved, to more success, happiness, memories and pride. Congratulations on 25 wonderful years🥂🩷’

The Spring sunshine continued to beam down on us here this week. Warm temperatures have heralded the return of our resident Swallows who have been swooping around the courtyard busily reinstating their mud nests in the stables. The sound of the first call of the Cuckoo in the Renclose woodland have been loud and clear at every sunrise and sunset. It feels like Spring has truly arrived here in the Charente. We treated ourselves to a much needed impromptu lunch .cheval.blanc.luxe after a long meeting with our Notaire this week. A delicious lunch involved the finest cheese chariot we have ever seen locally plus the happiest of waiters to help us choose which cheeses to enjoy! A night of fabulous folk music filled Verteuil with wonderful sound last night as a packed terrace reveled and danced under the back drop of the chateau. Our resident feline has struggled to get back into the groove of having guests around again we’re sure he sleeps for 23hrs a day! It’s a cats life! Sadly this week some cancellations have created gaps in our August diary. So if you fancy a late summer break with us here at Le Palais, please get in touch! À bientôt!

We’re ecstatic they’ve we’ve had an egg-cellent Easter here at Le Palais. The house has been filled to the rafters with a gorgeous family celebrating a wonderful gentleman’s big birthday. Many chocolate eggs were hidden, found and consumed. Much splashing and laughter in the swimming pool, an overflowing woodfired hot tub filled to the gunnels with chattering cousins, sunloungers for snoozing in the April sunshine on the terrace for relaxing parents and lots of sipping pink wine at sunset. Rejuvenating breakfast, buffet lunches, candlelit celebration suppers in the dining room and a poolside bbq to round a wonderful weekend of fabulous weather and the whole family together under one roof. This lovely, long weekend made us both realise the long hard winter, although it has been tough, has been more than worth it. Now time for us to have a glass of something cold in the sunshine! Santé, Joyeuses Pâques et à bientôt! 🇫🇷

Spring sunshine has spurred us on this week as we move over yet another renovation hurdle. With works in the barn racing on (finally!) we begin to wake the main house up ready for our lovely Easter guests. The heaviest doorstep was lifted into place to form the new entrance to the barn and allows us to measure up for the big window. What seemed like another mile of underfloor pipework has finally been laid and covered with its special liquid screed in the barn. The rumble of the concrete lorry disappearing down drive was a relief as he skillfully dodged our septic tank!! We sadly said goodbye to our poolside palm tree this week as we discovered it had begun to damage the pool terrace. Sad to see our lovely tree go but this gave Will an excuse to hire a digger for the day! Boys and toys! Sunsets at La Senechalerie are always a good way to end a very long week! Bon week-end à tous. 🇫🇷
