From Noriyasu Takahira OSS Nagasaki Japan

Yesterday, I was at my alma mater, Nimi Junior High School, giving a bombing talk as an exchange witness. Visiting my alma mater for the first time in 55 years, but it was a valuable experience. The students listened to me with a twinkle in their eyes. This time touched a little bit of my mom's bombing experience. In June, I plan to go to an elementary school in the city.

From Noriyasu Takahira OSS Ambassador Nagasaki Japan
Iojima in Nagasaki the other day. Island Iōjima also has a Mongolian ger-like glamping set up in February this year, and it seems to be very popular with outdoorsy families. The beach is also being maintained, and it looks like there will be a lot of beach swimmers this summer. But I also love Iojima with the bridge, lighthouse, church and tunnels.

Seeds collected from a cloned successor of the "Miracle Pine," a solitary tree that survived the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake in Rikuzentakata, will soon be preserved at the Millennium Seed Bank in the United Kingdom. Sumitomo Forestry Co. is donating these seeds, which were harvested in October 2025, to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, located in southwest London. The original pine tree became a renowned symbol of disaster recovery, and the British Embassy in Japan notes that these cloned seeds will promote international goodwill by representing human resilience.

The Royal Botanic Gardens, a World Heritage Site dedicated to environmental protection and scientific research, has expressed interest in receiving these seeds since 2012. Following necessary quarantine procedures, the seeds are scheduled to arrive in Britain later this summer, establishing a lasting emblem of Japan-U.K. friendship and the spirit of recovery.
