The hostel is located in the peaceful village of Elterwater, in the Langdale valley, 15 minutes drive from Ambleside. The area has many walks for people of all abilities, from gentle riverside meanders to the challenge presented by the Langdale Pikes, Bowfell and Scafell. We’re Hiring: Hostel Assistant

Elterwater Independent Hostel, Lake District
Immediate start | Seasonal role until the end of September

Do you enjoy working with people, take pride in creating welcoming spaces, and don’t mind rolling up your sleeves? We’re looking for a friendly and flexible Hostel Assistant to join our team for the busy summer season.

This is a varied, hands-on role where no two days are the same. You’ll support across reception, housekeeping, and food & beverage, helping us deliver a warm welcome, high standards, and a memorable guest experience.

What We’re Looking For

A positive, can-do attitude
Reliable and adaptable
Happy to work flexible hours, including weekends and bank holidays
Pride in delivering excellent customer service and maintaining clean, welcoming spaces
Previous hospitality experience is helpful but not essential — we value enthusiasm, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn above all else.

What We Offer

Minimum of 30 hours per week
Pay at National Living Wage

Looking for a relaxed, hearty evening meal? Join us for dinner!

Our main menu is served daily from 6:00–8:00pm, offering a great range of dishes to suit every appetite. Whether you’re in the mood for comforting classics like Cumberland sausage with mash, veg & onion gravy, a warming chicken or chickpea curry, or a generous bowl of chilli (beef or 5 bean), we’ve got you covered.

We also serve pasta and quiche of the day, plus 12” pizzas including pepperoni and margherita (also available to takeaway, perfect for something simple and satisfying.

Looking for something lighter? Choose from homemade soup, toasted sandwiches, or filled baguettes.

And if you’ve got a sweet tooth, our desserts including our famous sticky toffee pudding or chocolate fudge cake, the perfect way to finish your meal.

We also offer children’s meals, so it’s ideal for families.

You don’t have to be staying with us to dine, non-residents are always welcome. Whether you’re local or just passing through, come and enjoy a warm, friendly atmosphere and a delicious evening meal.

Served daily from 7:30am to 9:30am, we’ve got something for everyone, whether you’re after a hearty start or something a little lighter.

Tuck into The Cumbrian with sausage, bacon, eggs, hash browns and all the trimmings, or enjoy our vegetarian Fell Walker. Prefer something sweet? Try our American pancakes with forest fruits & yoghurt, or keep it light with a continental selection of pastries, yoghurt & muesli.

On the go? Grab a breakfast sandwich with bacon or sausage, simple and satisfying.

Pair it all with our fresh bean-to-cup coffee, from lattes and cappuccinos to a smooth Americano or choose from our range of teas and juices.

The best part? You don’t need to be staying with us to join us. Non-residents are always welcome, so whether you’re local or just passing through, come in and enjoy a relaxed, delicious start to your day.

We’re delighted to share that we’ve been awarded a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5-star Food Hygiene Rating! A huge thank you to our fantastic team for their hard work and commitment to maintaining the highest standards.

We’re also excited to introduce our refreshed dining experience, with new menus and a more relaxed, café-style approach.
You can now enjoy:
Breakfast served between 7:30am – 9:30am
Evening meals available from 6:00pm – 8:00pm

It’s all about great food in a more casual, welcoming setting.

A fantastic effort from Jen and Rich, completing this year’s first Elterwater Hostel 23 Before Tea round in 8 hours 35 minutes.

The day was also a recce for Jen’s planned attempt to break the female record later this year, so watch this space.

Best of all, they were welcomed back to the hostel with tea and sticky toffee brownie, which sounds like just about the perfect finish.

Well done both!

Lovely to host the Parbold Pink Panthers Running Club last weekend who have been staying with us annually for many years, this year not only running but celebrating a 50th and 60th birthday too, look forward to seeing you next year.

And here it is…..

Our new reception, bar servery and refreshed lounge/dining space are complete and we couldn’t be happier with the result.

Lighter, warmer colours, a more open layout and a calmer, more relaxed atmosphere from the moment you walk through the door.
It’s now a space to check in, grab a drink, sit back, and feel at home.
