Have you heard about The Bridge House? It's a must see when staying with us!
The house was built by the influential Braithwaite family of nearby Ambleside Hall. Historians believe it was constructed to provide access to their land on the opposite side of the beck and to store apples from orchards owned by the family.
There is a popular local legend that the building was erected over the stream to avoid paying land tax. While this story is widely repeated, historians and the National Trust generally regard it as folklore rather than a documented fact.
Dating back to the 17th century, this unique building stands over Stock Beck in the middle of Ambleside as a quirky reminder of Ambleside’s past.
