WEST IS BEST, THEY SAY

Travelling Scotland's Roure 66 offers so much to see and do. You will be pleasantly surprised and want to return for more.
Many people say that the West Coast part of the Route is the Best, but we say that it depends on what you are after.
Indeed, the West has terrific and stunning scenery and the ruggedness associated with the Highlands. Still, each area has something unique to offer, so please give each room time to explore.
The west coast of the Route stretches from Applecross to Cape Wrath and has some fantastic places to visit.
One of the most popular stops on the west coast of the Route is Applecross, a remote peninsula that offers breathtaking views of the Isle of Skye and the Cuillin mountains. Here you'll get to drive over the Bealach na Bà, one of Britain's highest and most challenging roads, with hairpin bends and steep gradients.
But don't worry, it's worth it for the scenery and the sense of achievement. Once you reach Applecross, you can enjoy a walk along the sandy beach, visit the heritage centre to learn about the history and culture of the area or treat yourself to some fresh seafood at the Applecross Inn.
Torridon is another region of the Route with majestic mountains, deep lochs and ancient forests. Torridon is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, with plenty of opportunities for hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing, and wildlife watching.
You can explore some of the most iconic peaks in Scotland, such as Liathach, Beinn Alligin and Beinn Eighe, or take a boat trip on Loch Torridon to see seals, dolphins and eagles.
You can also visit some charming villages in Torridon, such as Shieldaig, Diabaig and Kinlochewe.
Gairloch is a definite stop on the west coast of the Route, a seaside town that boasts a golf course, a museum and a range of shops and cafes.
Gairloch is also an excellent base for exploring nearby attractions, such as Inverewe Garden, a botanical garden that features exotic plants from around the world thanks to the Gulf Stream.
You can also visit the Big Sand Beach, a long stretch of golden sand backed by dunes and mountains, or take a whale-watching cruise from Gairloch Harbour to see minke whales, porpoises and basking sharks.
These are just some of the best places to visit on the west coast, but there are many more to discover along this amazing Route.
If you plan to drive the Route, you can just book your accommodation in advance since it can get busy during peak season.
You can also check out some of the online resources available for more information and tips on making the most of your trip.
