It's been a dry (and windy) winter and a wet spring here on Skye.
It's nice to live in a rain forest while the rest of Europe is struggling in the heat. Frogs rule on

Quite the contrast between winter and spring for the UK.

Join Us at Rubha Phoil, a Regenerative Culture Community on Skye, Scotland -- A Summer Invitation (or Longer)

Rubha Phoil is designed for these times.

In a world that often feels uncertain, disconnected, and fast-moving, we are creating something different here -- a grounded and supportive place to live, work, raise children, and imagine new ways forward together.

Remote yet connected, safe yet open, Rubha Phoil is steadily growing into a resilient ecosystem -- with increasing self-sufficiency in food and energy, shared knowledge, meaningful work, and people who genuinely care for one another and the land around them.

This summer, we’re opening the doors to new members -- whether for a trial period, a season of change, or perhaps something more long-term.

We’re especially looking for:
• Individuals with practical, creative, entrepreneurial, or land-based skills
• People who are curious about community living, collaboration, and a more intentional way of life
• We’re also beginning something special -- a small “gang” of kids growing up side by side, learning wildly from the land, from each other, from meaningful work, and from life beyond screens and rigid systems. So we're looking for families with children who would love to live close to nature and be part of an emerging village environment. Ideally we'd love two families joining around the same time so childcare, friendship, and support can grow naturally together.

There are opportunities here too:
• Ways to earn within the community
• Space and support to build your own project or business
• Possibilities for partnership, collaboration, and creating something meaningful together
• bring your own tiny home, rent a caravan or a house from us.
See the house here: http://rubhaphoil.org/house-for-rent
Apply or express interest here: https://www.rubhaphoil.org/volunteer/

If something in this speaks to you -- or to someone you know -- we’d love to hear from you.

Let’s build something real, together.

Happy to announce a new night shift security guard has joined the team at Rubha Phoil 👀🐾
Slightly intense eye contact, questionable working hours, and absolutely no interest in paying council tax… but we’re delighted to welcome this cheeky pine marten to the neighbourhood.

Bealltainn - Fires of May (By Resilient Celt)

There is heat and light - at last. Green returns, shoots shoot.
The birds are joyous and bees are busy. The cuckoo is here.

Bealltainn is the turning point into summer proper. Just as Samhain signifies winter coming; Bealltainn heralds summer - and similarly the veil is thin.

To the Celts, who were intimately connected to nature, this was time of hope for the future growing season to come, fertility, preparation and a deep knowing of the power of the earth. It was about fire, cattle, pasture, protection and seasonal transition. It was a time of great celebration - and they really liked to party.

It was time to move the cattle to the sheilings (summer pastures). But before this, as part of the celebrations, the livestock would be driven between two fires, or around one large one, to purify from winter past and protect them for the coming summer season.

The hilltops were bright with these fires, the glens full of Bealltainn smoke. The new fire, kindled after extinguishing all old ones, was particularly significant as a symbol of rebirth and reset, and the people would take home embers from the Bealltainn fire to remake their own hearths.

They also took the opportunity to let blood from the cattle at this point to make an important and nourishing foodstuff at the end of the winter scarcity. There was always quite a lot of spilled blood about, which might explain the modern association of Mayday protests with red. It’s in our collective subconscious.

There was also the tradition of gathering the dawn dew on Bealltainn morning. It was considered magical, healing and beautifying.

So when you wake on the first day of May, get out in your bare feet and wash your face in the dew from the grass and consider the things that connect us to who we are. The communities, the affinity with nature, the working with the seasons, the stories, the celebrations and all.

It is still inside us, deliberately hidden by the industrial revolution and all that followed, but it’s there - and it wants to come back.

February 1st - Imbolc and Brighde

I am busy making gates in the workshop at the moment which I suppose is quite appropriate for this time of year, the gateway to Spring.

This is the festival of Brighde and the start of the season of Imbolc.

She is starting to get the better of the Cailleach and now starts to walk the land, scattering fertility and the beginnings of new growth as she goes - and with that she brings the coming of the light.

Some say that this marks the start of Spring but more really, being a quarter day, it is the beginning of the end of winter, as there can be plenty of winter left to come yet.

But she marks not only the return of the light and warmth of the sun, but our own light as the mood starts to lift.

Imbolc is a c***k of light and hope that the miserableness of the Scottish winter might be coming to an end - the edge of things getting better.

A Way through.

Probably worth celebrating indeed..

Wishing you Imbolc greetings.
