What a brilliant afternoon at the x Brighton & Hove Tourism Alliance Hospitality & Tourism Industry Day and Meet the Makers event at Soho House at Brighton Beach House.

We felt very privileged to be invited and loved the opportunity to connect with so many amazing hospitality businesses, food and drink producers, makers and tourism professionals from across Brighton, Hove and the wider Sussex region.

From the Meet the Makers market to the masterclasses, the whole afternoon was packed with inspiration, but the real highlight for us was being treated to chef demos from some seriously talented people: Simon McKenzie, Sabu Joseph of Easy Tiger, , Ash Barton of The Copper Clam, and Ewan Waller of Mare.

We left with lots of ideas for how we can keep enhancing our own guest experience, especially through creative ways to showcase the very best food, drink and local talent that Sussex has to offer.

Huge thanks to Bite Sussex, Brighton & Hove Tourism Alliance, SoHo House, The Argus, and everyone involved in bringing such a fantastic industry event together.

We would love to keep the conversation going, so please tag yourselves if you were there, and we would be delighted to collaborate with any local makers, producers, chefs or hospitality businesses who can help us give our guests an even better taste of Sussex!

Who let this guy into Scale Show ?! 😜

One of the best things about attending the Scale conference in Brighton was bumping into Haz .estates

Not just because it was brilliant to see him again, but because it dawned on me pretty quickly what it meant that he was there.

You need at least 20 units to attend this conference!

And when I first met Haz, he was right at the beginning of his hospitality journey. He was based in Qatar, looking to start a hospitality business in the UK, and working towards acquiring his very first unit!

I had the pleasure of mentoring and supporting him through those early stages, helping him build the confidence, skills, systems and foundations needed to get started properly.

We had lost touch for a while, so seeing him in that room, having scaled from those early foundations into a real force in hospitality in the North East, was genuinely rewarding.

It is always a privilege to play even a small part in someone else’s journey. But it is especially special when you see them take that support, run with it, and build something brilliant.

Haz is going from strength to strength, and has built a fantastic brand .estates and following along the way. Make sure you follow him and keep an eye on what he is doing.

Moments like this are a reminder of why we love this industry. Behind every successful hospitality business you will always find amazing people like Haz backing themselves, learning fast, taking action and building something against the odds.

And sometimes, you get the honour of helping them take those first few steps ☺️

This week we swapped caravans, dust, and building projects for Scale UK in Brighton - one of the leading conferences for professional short-term rental operators.

What makes Scale UK unique is that you must be operating at least 20 properties to even be eligible to attend, bringing together some of the biggest and most innovative operators from across the UK and around the world.

For us, events like this are invaluable. Hospitality is constantly evolving, and we are committed to staying ahead of industry trends, regulations, technology, and best practice so we can continue delivering exceptional guest experiences.

Interestingly, this is the first conference in a while in which I have been able to attend purely as a delegate rather than a speaker. I am fortunate to regularly speak at industry events, sharing lessons from our own journey, so it was refreshing to spend two days learning, listening, and creating space to think strategically about the future of our business.

It was also a proud moment to bring along the next generation of the family business. Joe recently joined us as Revenue Management Assistant and, after this conference, has officially become our AI Ambassador too.

Many of you have followed our Sefton Place journey, but what we perhaps have not shared enough is that hospitality has been our family business for many years. Our company, Gateway Accommodation, has been awarded Gold for Quality in Tourism for two consecutive years and recognised for combining cutting-edge technology with a personal touch to create outstanding guest experiences.

As we move towards the finishing touches at Sefton Place, we are already thinking carefully about how to create something truly special. Because great hospitality is about far more than providing a beautiful room. It is about creating memorable experiences and lasting memories.

Meet Chris from the South Downs National Park Authority 🌿

We recently had the pleasure of showing Chris around Sefton Place and sharing our vision for creating a place where nature and hospitality can thrive side by side.

From the very beginning, our ambition for Sefton Place has been about so much more than accommodation. We want to create a haven where guests can reconnect with nature, slow down, and experience the incredible wildlife and landscapes that make the South Downs so special. Already, we are seeing nature respond. Through pond regeneration, meadow creation, tree planting, and leaving areas of the grounds intentionally wild, we have welcomed an abundance of wildlife back into the gardens, turning Sefton Place into a growing sanctuary for nature.

A big part of our conversation was about how Sefton Place can support the South Downs National Park Trust’s fantastic Visitor Giving programme. This initiative enables visitors to make small voluntary contributions that fund vital nature recovery, habitat restoration, access improvements, and conservation projects across the National Park. Since launching, participating tourism businesses have helped raise thousands of pounds for projects that protect and enhance this remarkable landscape for future generations. 🌱

The opportunity to create our own little corner for nature whilst also helping to support wider landscape-scale regeneration across the South Downs has always been central to our vision. We have fallen in love with this extraordinary place and want Sefton Place to be a force for good, both within our own grounds and beyond them.

A huge thank you to Chris for his enthusiasm, encouragement, and belief in what we are trying to achieve, and to the entire team at the South Downs National Park Trust and South Downs National Park Authority for their ongoing support and guidance. We are excited to continue working together and look forward to playing our part in supporting the amazing work being done across the National Park. 💚

How often do you get to enjoy a private tour of an English vineyard and winery? 🍇🍷

Last week we were lucky enough to spend the afternoon at the beautiful Stopham Vineyard in West Sussex, where we enjoyed a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at one of England’s most celebrated wineries.

Founded in 2007 by winemaker Simon Woodhead, Stopham has built an impressive reputation for producing award-winning English wines from its 15-acre estate in the South Downs National Park. The vineyard specialises in aromatic white wines crafted from hand-harvested grapes grown exclusively on-site.

The weather kept us guessing for a while, but the sun eventually made an appearance and showed off the vineyard’s stunning hillside setting in all its glory. There really is something special about sipping wine surrounded by rolling Sussex countryside.

A huge thank you to Simon and the team at Stopham for such an informative and welcoming tour of both the vineyard and winery. Learning about the winemaking process from the people who actually produce the wine made the experience even more memorable.

As for the tasting... well, we polished off the delicious wine before we even had time to film it! 😅 We were particularly chuffed with ourselves for correctly picking out those lovely fruity peach notes.

Experiences like this are exactly why we are so excited about opening our doors at Sefton Place. We know our future guests are going to love discovering local gems like Stopham through wine tastings, vineyard tours and unforgettable Sussex days out.

🍷 Who else enjoys discovering English wine country?

With the caravan now gone and the combo of wind and rain putting pay to our garden office plans, we needed a little bolthole today to escape to and catch up on some admin.

We posted recently for recommendations of West Sussex food spots that we might have missed from our wishlist (did you see it?) and in East Preston came up again and again... and now we can see why ☺️

Cool vibes, great coffee, lovely people and a proper slap-up breakfast made for the perfect working-from-anywhere setup. Had the sun been shining, we could have rounded it all off with a stroll straight onto the beach afterwards.

Safe to say, this one lived up to the hype.

Have you tried Grub & Gumption yet? If so, what’s your go-to order? 👇

Yesterday I went back to school… 🌿

I spent the day at the incredible Knepp Estate learning about gardening and land management with nature restoration at its heart.

I enrolled on a tour of the beautiful Walled Garden, which has transformed what was once a croquet lawn into a thriving space for wildlife. Despite the scorching heat, the garden was buzzing with pollinators and absolutely full of life.

Knepp has been a huge inspiration behind our vision for Sefton Place, and I came away brimming with ideas about how we can restore ecology, enhance biodiversity, and create even more opportunities for guests to reconnect with nature in our own special corner of Sussex.

A huge thank you to the team at Knepp Wilding for such an informative and inspiring tour. We have lots to learn, but plenty of ideas to start putting into practice. Knepp Wildland Foundation BBC Springwatch Visit Arundel Experience Sussex Sussex by the Sea Sussex Wildlife Trust

With the caravan leaving today, we have found ourselves reflecting on the last six months living on-site while transforming Sefton Place.

It has been equal parts chaos, adventure, exhaustion, and honestly… one of the most eye-opening experiences of our lives.

Most people think we are completely mad… and they are probably right. 😂

Here are 6 things we have learned from living in a caravan with the dog while building a dream:

1️⃣ Every cupboard becomes a Monica cupboard.

You open one door and a frying pan, dog lead, pair of pants and packet of paracetamol launch themselves directly at your face.

2️⃣ We need far less than we think we do.
We left behind a six-bedroom house full of “stuff” we supposedly could not live without… and we have barely thought about any of it.

3️⃣ Personal space becomes a luxury.
Living AND working together in a small box definitely teaches us to go easy on each other, to be kind and to remember to laugh at ourselves when life feels a bit intense.

4️⃣ The grass isn’t always greener.

This whole experience has reminded us that contentment is less about circumstances and more about perspective.

5️⃣ You appreciate simple things so much more.

Washing your hands in warm water. Not having to go outside when you need the loo in the middle of the night. Cooking in a kitchen that you don’t share with the local wildlife.

It’s funny how quickly ordinary things become luxuries when you temporarily lose them.

6️⃣ We are capable of far more than they we ever thought.

We are constantly surprised by our ability to take things in our stride and keep smiling.

when you have a vision for the change you want to make and the future you want to create for your family, your tolerance for discomfort gets recalibrated.

Sometimes mud.
Sometimes stress.
Lots of dust.
Often damp dog.

But little by little… one problem solved after another… the vision starts becoming reality.
And despite all the madness… we would do it all over again… probably… after a rest 🚐✨

Sefton Place is really starting to come to life now and the pace on site is picking up beautifully ✨

A few exciting updates from the last couple of weeks…

• The concrete floor has been cut out in what will become the kitchen for Sussex House so that we can create one seamless, level floor finish
• A brand new wall has gone in at the end of Reeds Wellness & Function Space, complete with provision for AV equipment for networking events, room hire and business meetings
• Concrete has been poured to complete the damp proof works for the rear ground floor bedrooms
• Windowsills are now being installed in the first floor bedrooms — a small detail, but seeing finishes start to go in is making us ridiculously giddy
• Bathroom suites are being fitted and we genuinely cannot stop stroking the brushed brass taps
• The first of the gorgeous porcelain shower tiles are now going in
• First fix electrics are complete for the ground floor suites
• Wild meadow seed has been sown around the new yoga and stargazing deck 🌿
• And the new lawn has been seeded around the toe-dipping deck by the pond

So much still to do, but it is finally starting to feel real ✨
