🔥The final part of the story!... The fire pit was lit and enjoyed by guests deep into the evening! 🔥
Our guests staying in the Cottage by the Pond couldn't be kept out of the new wheelchair accessible seating area overlooking the Pond by the cottage! Sue painted the fence black to make it disappear a bit, I think it worked 🤔. Sue planted a sensory garden; lavender, broom, rosemary and jasmine. All the recent rain filled the pond up nicely!

A Story Part 5... Its rained! Hooray (sorry😬) We fitted the fountain - to look at, to listen to and to help oxygenate the water. Sue's first opportunity to wear her Christmas present waders! 💦💦
Next we put gravel and pebbles around the edge on the pond. This will protect the liner as the water level goes up and down. Being dependent on rain water, in summer levels may drop a lot.

A Story....Part 4. 40 years ago we intended to make a wheelchair accessible place to sit in the sunshine but it never happened- Now was our opportunity! Farmer Terry made a level access and with Duncan's help a smooth area was paved.

A Story ....Part three. We lined the profiled dish shape with lots of old carpet and underlay (thank you friends and carpet donors!) Then the 10m x 10m pond liner was laid on to the carpet. We redirected some water from the north roof tank to start filling the pond.💦💦

A story ...Part two. Over the last three years the pond by the Cottage by the Pond had almost no water in it- the forty year old liner had obviously failed! So friend Duncan came with his mini digger and profiled a new pond shape. We hoiked out a huge amount of the invasive reed that had taken over. Now we're ready for the new liner to go on old carpet that had to be scrounged from various places 👍

Well, this is a story...Part one. Then and now. The pond by the Cottage by The Pond.
40 years ago we restored the old mere at Beechenhill, but about three years ago the liner failed so we have been restoring it all over again!
You can see in the first picture how deep it was when it was first made in 1900s. It provided all the water for the farm as there was no mains water until 1960s. The mere, a big dish, lined first with lime to kill off any plants trying to grow through from underneath, was then lined with clay and 'puddled' by sheep's feet to make it waterproof.
Then carefully placed stones were laid to protect the clay. The mere was and still is fed by rain water from the south roofs of the buildings. (a massive tank behind the farmhouse takes north roof water). When they ran out of water in the summer someone had to take a horse and cart one mile down to Ilam Village and fill a tank from the river Manifold, or from the village fountain. To be continued/
