The Forest Compost Toilet 🌲💩

It’s one of the biggest questions we get from guests planning an off-grid escape: "How does a compost toilet actually work?"

The short answer? It’s actually super simple, and a cornerstone of low-impact living. Instead of using a flush, you just sprinkle a bit of saw dust, reducing our water usage and creating a beautiful loop.

Everything is naturally broken down and transformed into nutrient-rich compost for our polytunnel, where our friend produces beautiful flower arrangements. It's a truly circular system.

Got questions about the eco-loo life? Drop them below...no judgment here! 👇🦆

A calm corner of the woods to call your own. 🪵✨

Happy Friday! If you listen closely, you might just hear the sound of running water from our new outdoor shower.

We’ve spent the last few weeks working away on a new addition to the Homestead, and we’re so incredibly happy with how it’s come together. Tucked under amongst the forest, we’ve just finished installing its very own heated outdoor shower.

For us, the Homestead has been about finding that sweet spot between rustic forest living and simple, grounding comforts. It still asks you to slow down and practice those beautiful off-grid rituals, like tending to the wood-burning stove or taking the short walk to the compost toilet...but now, you get to wash the day wrapped in steam and the scent of Scots pine. 🌲🚿

It’s our version of a soft landing into the woods. A place to ease into a slower pace without having to leave every single comfort behind.

Have a bliss weekend everyone 🦆

Keep an eye out for Sunday's post which shares the differences between our 3 off-grid huts.

Remember those drilling noises we teased last week? The secret is out... 🤫☀️

We have been hard at work at the Homestead, and we are so excited to finally show you what’s been happening. The Homestead now features its very own heated outdoor shower. 🚿✨

Our dream is for each of our forest huts to have their own personality and purpose. With these new updates, we’ve reimagined the Homestead as our perfect "stepping stone" into the world of off-grid living.

If you’ve always wanted to experience the magic of unplugging in the forest, but the idea of going completely elemental feels a little daunting, this is your place to start.

You still get the authentic, slow-living rituals:
🔥 Lighting the wood-burning stove as your main heat source.
🌲 Strolling through the pines to your private compost toilet hut.
📱 Leaving the digital noise behind.

But you also get a few gentle home comforts to ease you in...like mains water straight from the tap and that beautiful, warm outdoor shower surrounded by birdsong and with a view of the pines.

Think of it as off-grid living, with a soft landing.

We’ll be sharing a full breakdown soon of how all our huts differ so you can find your perfect match.

Until then, who wants to give the new shower a try? 🪵🦆

The antidote to a noisy week. ☕🎲

A quiet corner of the forest, a warm fire, a bit of friendly competition over a board game, and all the space you need to reset.

Whether you’re sharing the silence with your favorite people or just listening to the birds in the pines, we hope your weekend brings you a little bit of this stillness.

Slow down and enjoy the evening, everyone. From our quiet corner to yours. 🦆🌲

Occasionally, changeover days get a little noisy around here... 🛠️

Behind the quiet magic of the forest, there is often a lot of tinkering to be done.

Here is what’s been keeping us busy down by the pond:

☀️ Powering up: The first of a whole row of new solar panels has officially been secured onto the Base Camp roof. It’s all part of our aim to tread as lightly as possible on this beautiful planet.

🤫 Something's happening at The Homestead : There's been a lot of noise coming from this wee hut with some exciting developments on their way (more to follow on this soon).

💩 The glamorous side: Roger has been hard at work doing our bi-annual compost toilet sh*t shovelling. It’s not the most pleasant job, but it’s the ultimate closed-loop system. The decomposing organic matter is stored safely and eventually feeds the soil in our polytunnel. From there, our local friend Lucka works her magic, turning those forest nutrients into spectacular wedding bouquets. 🌸 (Sorry we seem to spend far to much talking about 💩 on here).

It’s all part of the rhythm of keeping The Lazy Duck waddling. Thanks for following along with the noisy work behind the scenes! 🦆

Are there any changes that you would like to see happen here??

"What a perfect place to switch off, get in tune with nature and take it slow." 🌲

We loved reading these words from Gabby after her stay in the Woodsman’s hut. Hearing that our guests are truly finding that "slow" rhythm is exactly why we do what we do.

Whether it’s the heat of the sauna, the sound of the birds, or the ritual of the bush shower, the Woodsman’s is designed to help you leave the rush, and find space to process.

As we head into the weekend, we hope you find your own little pocket of peace, wherever you are.

If you could switch off anywhere in the forest right now, would you choose the sauna, the hammock, or a seat by the fire?

After last week’s post all about how precious our rainwater is...🌧️

We found one of our main barrels at the Ducks Nest had a pretty serious leak, so last week's mission was to get it replaced.

Our barrels are sourced from a local distillery where they used to store whisky. I have to say, they smell pretty incredible when you first get them—it’s a brilliant way to give them a second life as our rainwater collectors.

Roger got the pipes lined up and sealed (a bit of a puzzle, but we got there), and just like that, we’ve got running water for the showers again.

Now, in true Highland fashion, we just need a good downpour to test out the new setup.

Have you ever found a creative way to reuse something old in your own garden?

The rain ripples on the pond 🌧️

Looking at the news right now, it can often feel like a constant storm out on the seas. We feel as though The Lazy Duck needs to be more than simply an escape from that storm.

A shelter from it, yes, but a shelter that allows space to think about the difficulties and the hurt happening throughout this beautiful world of ours.

A place to slow down. A place to process.

April showers and new beginnings. 🌧️🦆

April has arrived in true Highland fashion...plenty of rain on the pond and the evening light hanging around a wee bit longer.

Despite the weather and quiet week onsite it's been busy behind the scenes...

Roger has been out in the thick of it, working on the new changing room for the sauna. He’s been repurposing old corrugated iron from around the site to give it a second life. 🛠️

He’s also been dismantling a section of the old duck coop, opening up the ground to let nature take that space back. 🌿

Our friend Lucka has been busy in the polytunnel, nurturing the first seeds of the season as she prepares a variety of blooms for summer wedding bouquets. 💐

Matt has been busy writing a couple of new blogs, responding to emails and, taking videos of himself taking videos again. 📸

Plus, you’ll spot some new signage around the site to help you find your way.

It might look like there's a lot going on in the background but all this "doing" is for a reason. We’re working hard to make sure that when you’re here, you have the perfect environment to slow down, settle in, and truly process.
