✨ WAY BACK WEDNESDAY ✨

Week 1: The Story Behind The Tuckers Arms

One of the most fascinating local stories surrounding The Tuckers Arms is its connection to the building of Dalwood’s church.

While the Church of St Peter opposite dates largely from the 15th century, local accounts suggest that the lodge attached to The Tuckers Arms was built to house the craftsmen and builders working on the church. It is thought that the farmer who owned the property would have provided accommodation and food for the workers, marking the beginning of the site’s evolution from a working farm into a hostelry.

There is also evidence that an earlier wooden church stood on the site before the stone building we see today, meaning this area has been a focal point of village life for centuries.

The landscape would have looked very different back then. The valley was far more heavily wooded and the nearby river was considerably wider than it is today. Over the years, many of those trees were felled, some for boat building, while the surrounding land was gradually cleared and turned over to agriculture.

At that time, Dalwood wasn’t even part of Devon. Until 1842, the village officially belonged to Dorset.

Today, visitors often describe walking into The Tuckers Arms as “stepping back in time”. Beneath the beams, fireplaces and ancient walls lies a history that stretches back through generations of farmers, church builders, villagers and travellers, all of whom have played a part in the story of this remarkable building.
