Due to our recent family bereavement, we have taken the decision to close our Bed and Breakfast for the foreseeable future.

We thank all those who have stayed with us in the past, and supported our business.

Crust me, this bread is delicious!

Guests at Mill View enjoy the wafting aroma of freshly baked bread every day, and I try to ensure a variety of different loaves every day, from simple pan loaves, soda bread, seeded wholegrain, malt loaves, dark rye, coconut glazed fruit breads, gluten free bread, and one of our most popular breads - Hokkaido, or Japanese Milk Bread.

This is none of these.

This is condensed milk bread.

I was dubious when I first read of this recipe, condensed milk in a bread?? I thought it would be dense and overly sweet.

Oh boy was I wrong. This bread is gloriously fluffy, with a beautiful glaze and slices perfectly. Yes, it is a sweet bread, akin to Brioche, but better ( in my own humble opinion)

It's delicious warm and fresh from the oven, spread with some of our home made butter, or one of the many jams and preserves we make here at Mill View. It also toasts beautifully, and is so moreish, one slice is never enough.

What is your favourite bread, and how do you like it served - a bacon sandwich, jeelie piece (jam sandwich), or used to mop up the remains of poached eggs?

I have to thank our dog India, who wanted out for a p*e, for getting me out of bed to witness the most breathtaking display of noctilucent clouds I have ever witnessed. The skies over Gress are absolutely stunning tonight.

I didn't want to wake our guests by scrabbling around to get my camera and tripod, so the mobile had to do. If I didn't have to be up at 5am, I would have wrapped up warm and stood watching the skies until dawn.

All this, and breakfast too!

How do you like your carrot cake in the morning?

This one is an old favourite, moist and delicious with carrots, pineapple, coconut and sultanas, and topped with a smooth and moreish cream cheese frosting made with our home made cream cheese.

Carrot cake: it's not just for afternoon tea. Kickstart your day with two of your five-a-day fruits and vegetables!

What a display the Northern Lights put on tonight!

With a solar storm exploding overhead I was able to take our guests into the croft, show them what to look for, and watch as they took their first photo and gasped in amazement when they saw the full colour of the Aurora dancing across the sky.

That was their first experience of the Northern Lights, and I am so glad they got to experience the magic of Lady Aurora before they left the Island.

Have you seen the Northern Lights or the Aurora Australis?

The Scottish Croissant

These go by a few names; Butteries, Rowies, Aberdeen Rolls - whatever you call them, they are a delicious breakfast treat.

They have the flaky texture of croissants, with the softness of breakfast rolls.

Best served warm and spread with some of our creamy home made butter and jam. We always have Strawberry and Grenadine, Jumbleberry, Rhubarb and Ginger,or Lemon Curd on the breakfast table.

Why not try them with some of our home made cream cheese, or Crowdie, (all spread on the underside, absolutely not the top!). One thing for sure, these will keep you full and full of energy all day long.

Do you have any regional specialities that go down a treat at breakfast (or any time!)?

We always have fresh Parmesan and Wild Garlic oatcakes on the breakfast table. They are delicious with our home made Crowdie (a soft Hebridean curd cheese), and now there in another cheesy alternative - home made Mascarpone cream cheese. It sounds a bit Italian for the Hebrides, so I think we will label it Mac-arpone!

Rich, and creamy, it's delicious spread on oatcakes or fresh scones and washed down with a pot of our Madainn Mhath (good morning!) tea from the The Hebridean Tea Store

An unexpected surprise from our recent guests.

Internationally acclaimed artist Robin Munro, and his lovely partner Gwen Cantu spent some time at Mill View. Robin specialises in landscapes of the Hebrides, and Americas, and works primarily in watercolours and pastels.

They visited Garry Beach during their stay, and Robin painted this in situ, using seawater on his brushes. We were absolutely delighted when he presented his signed painting to us. Now to find a suitable frame to complement the gorgeous colours and textures he captured with his artists eye for detail.

This will take pride of place alongside a print of his Callanish Stones watercolour which hangs in our guest suite.

You can see more of Robin's work on Facebook at Hebrides Artist Robin Munro

Porridge is always a popular menu choice, and alongside our traditional salted porridge, we also serve whisky porridge, amaretto and cinnamon porridge, and (pictured below) our most popular porridge plates, Strawberry Cheesecake porridge, slowly cooked oats flavoured with maple syrup and served with a vanilla and mascarpone cream, fresh strawberries, a light biscuit crumb, and strawberry coulis, and Banoffee porridge, again slowly cooked oats flavoured with maple syrup and served with sliced bananas, luscious caramel, toasted flaked almonds, and a drizzle of vanilla cream.

Trust me, this will keep you full of energy all day.

It's been a while...!

2023 has been our busiest year to date at Mill View Bed and Breakfast, and we have welcomed visitors from just about every corner of the globe, making many new friends, and saying Fàilte to many old friends who have made return visits.

There have been a couple of new additions to our popular breakfast menu, but to whet your appetite, feast your eyes on today's freshly baked goodies.

For those with a sweet tooth we have rich almond and raspberry, where the tartness of home grown fruits compliments the sweetness of an almond and amaretto flavoured cake.

Those who prefer a more savoury taste sensation can indulge in our wild garlic and parmesan oatcakes, delicious with home made butter or our own crowdie and cream.

Our bread of the day is a soft and billlowy Japanese Milk Bread, delicious fresh from the oven and spread with the always popular jumbleberry jam, or lemon curd, or toasted with some orange, mango and pineapple marmalade.

All that, and breakfast too!

A taste of the Hebrides

Home made Wild Sea Truffle oatcakes, with freshly made (this afternoon) crowdie.

What are wild sea truffles, I hear you ask - they are one of the many species of edible seaweeds which grow in abundance around our shorelines, and these wild sea truffles are delicious and nutritious.

Crowdie is a soft curd cheese traditionally made in Hebridean and Highland homes when every family had an abundance of milk from cattle.

Put together these are a match made in culinary heaven and provide something different on our breakfast table.
