Last weekend of the season πŸŒ…

What a year for wildlife: multiple quails, two broods of barn owls fledged, a new resident fox, 30+ clouded yellows in the meadows, and pantaloon bees in the sandy banks.

Out in the wildacres, hawthorn and bramble thickets are emerging and are already home to nesting whitethroats.

Thank you to every camper who supported the project this year.

Exciting plans on the horizon… watch this space πŸ‘€

See you next May!

It's Owl Appreciation Day, and we've got a lot to appreciate.

Four species recorded here at Castle Wild Camp so far: barn owls quartering the meadows at dusk, tawnies calling through the woods after dark, little owls (like this one) perched up on the old posts and hedgerow trees, and short-eared owls foraging.

Just the long-eared to go. One day πŸ¦‰

Ants farming aphids on a hawthorn sapling that seeded itself into our wildacres field. They guard the herd, the aphids pay in honeydew - a partnership millions of years old, on a tree that wasn't here three years ago.

Last summer we recorded our very first clouded yellow here - a single butterfly passing through the meadows. Today we've recorded over 30 of them, flitting between the flower heads in golden flashes.

Clouded yellows are migrants, arriving from southern Europe and North Africa, and in good years they turn up in real numbers. It looks like 2026 might be one of those years - and it's a lovely sign that our meadows are giving them exactly what they need.

Keep your eyes peeled if you're staying with us. They're fast fliers, but that buttery yellow is unmistakable....

πŸ”₯βž‘οΈπŸ’§ Campfires paused at Castle Wild Camp - here's why.

Norfolk Fire & Rescue attended over 200 outdoor fires in the first two weeks of July alone, and their advice is clear: no open fires while the ground is this dry. As a conservation site surrounded by the habitats and wildlife we exist to protect, we've made the tough decision to pause campfires.

So until the fire severity rating drops: no campfires. Gas stoves are fine β€” every glade has its own slab cooking base ready to go.

The fires will be back. The barn owls, deer, pantaloon bees and ancient hedgerows wouldn't be. Easy call, honestly.

Thanks for camping with care and helping to protect the special site we've created πŸ•οΈπŸ’š

Dinner time! Great to see all 3 chicks doing well and out on the balcony.

Not so good to see a thriving spider population right in front of the camera 🀣
