Bothan Beag Geal

Bothan Beag Geal One Bedroom self catering bothy. Ideally placed to explore Isle of Lewis and the Isle of Harris. Towels and bed linen provided. They all have pages.

Homely and peaceful rental, good public transport accessible, fantastic views, off road parking. The nearby Inn might be open for food, it's one mile along from the bothy, plus there are some FANTASTIC fresh food takeaway vans, i think there at four on Harris.. Nearest one is Taste N Sea, around a 15 minute drive from the bothy, heading towards Harris.... Worth checking. Also Lorna's Larder, furt

her south in Harris. Must add that in the village of Balallan there's a community centre now doing lunches and evening meals. At the same location there's commercial washing machines and tumble driers. All handy to have so close by.

Happy New Year everybody🎉😁

Going into this season with April, May, June and a chunk of July booked already..

Summer timetable is now available for CalMac so please please please make sure you have the ferry booked in time for your trip. 2 people last year missed a night as they just assumed they'd get on at Ullapool😱

Here we go again, (although summer seems a long way off as I'm currently snowed in... Aberdeenshire is absolutely buried in snow🌨️🌨️🌨️🌨️🌨️❄️❄️😊)

big thanks to the guests who are returning, can hardly believe there are people on their 5th stay at the Bothy 🤗

Where did summer 2025 go?! In the blink of an eye we're into Autumn. Just wanted to post a wee thank you to all the people who came back to the Bothy this year. Some guests are onto their 4th visit, it's hugely satisfying to know that they love to come back to the wee bothy for a chill out break! To the new guests who came, (some of whom are already booked in for 2026) welcome!

Here's just one review from this year which sums up nicely the overall sense of peace and quiet you can find at the Bothy.

"We have stayed at Fiona's place a few times , and we hope to come again soon. We love the feeling of remoteness, peace and tranquility, the ever changing weather patterns, the tide in the Loch, and everything about the place itself. It is a perfect space for two people with a good bed and shower, room to cook your own food, and comfortable seating areas. Also thank you Fiona for being so helpful in ensuring everything is spot on. We just hope that too many other people don't find it and stop us booking when we want to go ! "

Thank you all and haste ye back :)

ELECTRIC CARS - There is a charging point just one mile from the Bothy up at the Community Centre car park in Balallan - please use this as I DO NOT ALLOW THE USE OF EXTENSION CABLES FOR CHARGING CARS. My insurance company have backed me up in this and I have it written into my terms and conditions for my Short Term Let Licence - see folder in the Bothy to confirm this. People who say I'm being unreasonable, stop for a 5 minute coffee, and ask yourself would I be arriving at the Bothy with cans of Petrol if you had a Petrol Car? Hmmm no!! On checking there is also a charging point back down the road at the wee car park next to the Scaladale Centre. Just above that there is the most beautiful walk with fantastic views, where better to charge the car and have a nice wander while that's happening? :)

Machair is one of Scotland’s most remarkable living landscapes, where people manage the land in a way that encourages wildlife.

A Gaelic word meaning fertile, low-lying grassy plain, ‘machair’ refers to a unique habitat that is one of the rarest in Europe; only occurring on the exposed west-facing shores of Scotland and Ireland.

Please don't drive on these precious landscapes, keep them clean and preserved so that nature can thrive!

Season underway, guests from Holland, France, NZ, Canada, Germany etc etc... It's a busy season ahead, multi national😁. Great to know the Western Isles is so appealing to people from all around the world. All the photographers who have stayed have been delighted with the central location for ease in exploring.

Here's an image looking across to Ceapabhal and Scarista, showing the lazy beds that crofters worked to grow food, hauling seaweed up the hill to fertilise the land. Strong, hardy people🙂.
