A short drive from Ballater, tucked away in the stunning scenery of Muir of Dinnet National Nature Reserve, Burn O’Vat is a fascinating natural pothole carved into the landscape by glacial meltwater. 🌿🏔️

A short woodland walk takes you through the forest and towards the impressive vat, where you can scramble through the rocky entrance and discover the dramatic rock formation inside.

It’s the perfect spot for a little adventure, surrounded by the beautiful landscapes of Royal Deeside. Walking boots advised as you may get wet feet!

You’ll find an enticing selection of fresh fruit and veg, a delicious selection of local and continental cheeses along with cooked meats and antipasta. Their homemade quiche’s are amazing and you can also pick up sandwiches freshly made to order. You can always be guaranteed a laugh and some friendly banter too!

For those who love a bit of history, you can find Tomnaverie Stone Circle about a 20 minute drive from Ballater, just outside the village of Tarland.

Dating back more than 4,000 years, this beautifully restored recumbent stone circle offers a fascinating glimpse into Scotland's prehistoric past. Surrounded by rolling countryside and with stunning views towards Lochnagar, it's a peaceful place to pause, explore and imagine what life was like thousands of years ago! This picture was taken at sunrise in early Spring this year.

Ballater is renowned for its warm Highland hospitality and thriving pub culture! We are so lucky to still have traditional, busy pubs in our village.

We are sure many of you will have spent an evening or two in The Balmoral Bar during your stay. The Balmoral Bar is a family (and dog) friendly bar in the heart of the village. Independently run, the owners and staff have created the most lively and welcoming atmosphere that bring locals and visitors together. They have regular live music nights and they serve delicious bar meals too. What more do you need for your night out!

Have you been to The Balmoral Bar? What’s been your highlight, we’d love to hear!

Walk or Bike Through History on the Deeside Way 🚂🌿

This beautiful traffic-free trail follows the route of the old Deeside Railway, which once carried passengers through the heart of Royal Deeside, including members of the Royal Family travelling to nearby Balmoral Castle. Although the railway closed in the 1960s, its legacy lives on as one of Scotland's most picturesque walking and cycling routes.

You can join the trail right from Ballater, making it the perfect adventure whether you're looking for a leisurely morning stroll, a family bike ride or a longer day out exploring the area.
