Just a short drive from Ballater, Loch Kinord sits within the beautiful Muir of Dinnet National Nature Reserve. With its woodland setting, tranquil waters and well-marked circular trail, it's a wonderful place to enjoy a scenic walk overlooking the loch.Keep your eyes open as you walk, the loch and surrounding birch woodland are home to a variety of wildlife and birds.

The area is rich in history, including the fascinating Kinord Cross, an intricately carved Christian monument dating from the 9th century, which stands on the shores of the loch. There are also fascinating archaeological remains around the loch, making this a walk where nature and history come together.

You can reach this walk from the Burn O Vat carpark or Dinnet carpark. For any of our guests who have been, we would love it if you could share some of your pictures in the comments!

Just west of the village, on the south side of the River Dee, you'll find the atmospheric ruins of Knock Castle.

This four-storey, 16th-century tower house was built for the Gordon family and is now in the care of Historic Environment Scotland. The walls remain standing, although the tower is roofless, and you can still see the vaulted basement and spiral turnpike staircase.

Knock Castle also has a fascinating, and rather dark, history. The seven sons of Alexander Gordon, the 3rd Laird of Knock, were murdered by a neighbouring rival clan, the Forbes. The story adds another layer of intrigue to this atmospheric Highland ruin.

The castle can be reached on foot from Ballater, starting from the Old Royal Station. 🚶

The Bread Guy

The award-winning bakery, The Bread Guy, opened its Ballater shop in 2025, bringing its range of artisan breads, pies, cakes, pastries and famous Aberdeenshire butteries to the village.

The team is passionate about traditional baking, quality ingredients and bringing proper local baking back into communities. We are very luck to have them on our doorstep!

If you haven't tried an Aberdeenshire buttery before, this could be the perfect opportunity! Freshly baked, golden and deliciously buttery, they're a true taste of the North East of Scotland.

Looking for a peaceful walk surrounded by beautiful woodland and wildlife? The Cambus o’ May Pinewood Trail is just a short drive from Ballater and makes a wonderful outing during your stay.

The 4.25km circular trail winds through tranquil pine forest, with lovely views across Deeside and towards the surrounding Cairngorms. Along the way, you’ll pass two picturesque lochans and cross several small bridges, making this a walk with plenty to discover. Keep your eyes and ears open as you explore, the woodland is home to lots of wildlife! 🐿️🌿

The Pine Tree Trail takes around 1 - 2 hours and has some steep sections, uneven ground, exposed tree roots and muddy or rocky patches, so sturdy footwear is recommended.

A peaceful forest walk, beautiful scenery and the chance to spot some of Deeside’s wildlife. 💚

Standing proudly above Ballater, Craigendarroch Hill is one of the village’s most recognisable landmarks, and it’s well worth the climb!

The name Craigendarroch means “Hill of Oaks”, and the route takes you through beautiful woodland of ancient oak, birch and Scots pine before opening out to spectacular views.

The summit walk is steep and rocky in places, with the climb rewarded by wonderful views across Ballater, the River Dee valley and towards Lochnagar.
The summit route is around 4.5km / 2.75 miles, with approximately two hours recommended for the circular walk. Good footwear is definitely advised, particularly after wet weather when the rocks and tree roots can become slippery.

You can start the walk right from Ballater, making it an ideal way to spend a morning or afternoon during your stay.

Located on Bridge Street, The Bothy is a welcoming café serving up breakfast, lunch, coffee and cake. Much loved by both locals and visitors, you are always guaranteed a friendly welcome and cosy and relaxed atmosphere! They put in great effort to catering for dietary requirements and there are always plenty of options on the menu.

They have also thoughtfully created leaflets for local walks which you can pick up from the café. And if you happen to be getting ready for an outdoor adventure, the adjoining Outdoor Store is ideal for picking up any essentials you might need!
