An icon of the Scottish Highlands – you’ll never forget seeing the majestic silhouette of the red deer on the ridge for the first time!

Red deer are the fourth-largest deer in the world (beaten by the moose, elk and sambar deer), and they’re Britain’s largest land mammal. Those living in woodlands are larger than those that live on the open hill.

Only stags grow antlers, which can be over 1 metre in length, with 4–5 tines (points) on each antler.

Habitat: Woodland or open hill.

Food: grasses, dwarf shrubs including blaeberry and heather (important in times of winter snow), and trees.

Good Trust places to spot them: Balmacara, Mar Lodge Estate, Torridon.
