Bangor FC Ladies made it four wins on the spin in the NIWFA Championship, with a clinical first half the platform for their 4-1 success over Greenisland Women at Glenkeen Avenue on Wednesday night.
Greenisland set the ball rolling, with both sides feeling their way into the contest early on and keeping solid defensive shapes that initially proved tough to crack. Bangor thought they had unlocked their hosts on eight minutes when Amber Dempster played in Marshall, who raced behind and looked set for a one-on-one with the Greenisland goalkeeper, but she was ruled offside.
But it proved a sign of things to come as the Seasiders took the lead two minutes later. Naomi Donnan threaded a neat pass into Amanda Morton, who stayed composed while in on goal and picked her spot before placing low into the net – her first goal of the season.
And on 16 minutes, the advantage was doubled. Toni Stewart played a perfectly weighted through ball in behind that was into Marshall's stride, and she finished clinically into the bottom left to extend Bangor's cushion.
Bangor looked to assert their authority on the game, with Janine Jess attempting an audacious effort from close to halfway that edged just wide of the Greenisland goal on 20 minutes, while the visitors also stayed mean in defence as goalkeeper Angela Buckley remained largely untested.
Dempster did well to trap the ball under her spell and let fly from range just after the half-hour mark, forcing a low save from the Greenisland goalkeeper, while Marshall curled one not far over the crossbar after an astute give-and-go with Erin Hennity on 33 minutes.
But Marshall wasn't to be denied a minute later. After Dempster fired in a tantalising cross from the left, the Greenisland defender got in and played it back to the goalkeeper who palmed it away – but only as far as the in-form Marshall, who slammed in from close range for Bangor's third of the night.
Greenisland offered a threat when a free-kick on 40 minutes wasn't fully cleared, and Nicole Wheeldon's shot was deflected inches past Buckley's left-hand post for a corner – the resulting delivery from the right was a dangerous one but couldn't get a touch inside the box.
And on 45 minutes, they pulled one back – a dipping long-range effort from Rachel Patterson that nestled in the back of Buckley's net to make it 3-1 at half-time.
Bangor got the action back under way and could almost have restored their three-goal cushion within a minute of the restart – Marshall chasing a hat-trick and breaking through down the left, but she saw her shot saved by the Greenisland goalkeeper who recovered before Stewart could latch on to the rebound.
The Seasiders continued to maintain their intensity and work hard, and they threatened again through Marshall who forced an astute near-post parry from the Greenisland stopper that resulted in a right-sided corner on 57 minutes. That corner found Stewart at the back post, but she was caught unsighted and the danger was subsequently cleared.
Greenisland then won a corner before the hour mark on the right, and it had to be dealt with as they looked to reduce it to a one-goal game. Emi Wynne was, meanwhile, bringing an fresh injection of energy on the left wing as he came on as a half-time substitute.
The hosts let fly with a long-range effort on 64 minutes that was on target and had to be saved by Buckley, while another distance drive was turned behind for a corner which was eventually cleared – but the momentum was with Greenisland at this stage in the game.
Robyn McFadden replaced Dempster in a change up top for the visitors with 20 minutes to play, but Greenisland's high-pressing approach was still a constant as Bangor looked to the likes of Stewart, Marshall and Wynne to lead the charge going forward.
Donnan forced a corner down the left on 76 minutes and Stewart took command, though an increasing breeze saw it turned in towards the side netting, but it was a cue for the game to peter out somewhat as Bangor got to grips with the pressure being put on them.
Greenisland did, though, earn a free-kick on 85 minutes which home captain Yasmin Craig took command off, forcing a save from Buckley at her right-hand post, while Marshall almost caught the Greenisland goalkeeper off her line as her shot had to be blocked.
And in the second minute of stoppage-time, Jess applied the coup de grace with an exceptional long-range free-kick that picked out the top left corner to make it four, with Bangor doing enough in what remained to see out the contest and take home the three points.
