Four out of four…on a roll!

MATCH REPORT – Greenisland Women 1-4 Bangor FC Ladies
Northern Ireland Women's Football Association Championship, Wednesday 22nd April
Goalscorers: Rachel Patterson (45'); Amanda Morton (10'), Olivia Marshall (16', 34'), Janine Jess (90+2')

Bangor FC Ladies made it four wins on the spin in the NIWFA Championship, with a clinical first half the platform for their 4-1 success over Greenisland Women at Glenkeen Avenue on Wednesday night.

Greenisland set the ball rolling, with both sides feeling their way into the contest early on and keeping solid defensive shapes that initially proved tough to crack. Bangor thought they had unlocked their hosts on eight minutes when Amber Dempster played in Marshall, who raced behind and looked set for a one-on-one with the Greenisland goalkeeper, but she was ruled offside.

But it proved a sign of things to come as the Seasiders took the lead two minutes later. Naomi Donnan threaded a neat pass into Amanda Morton, who stayed composed while in on goal and picked her spot before placing low into the net – her first goal of the season.

And on 16 minutes, the advantage was doubled. Toni Stewart played a perfectly weighted through ball in behind that was into Marshall's stride, and she finished clinically into the bottom left to extend Bangor's cushion.

Bangor looked to assert their authority on the game, with Janine Jess attempting an audacious effort from close to halfway that edged just wide of the Greenisland goal on 20 minutes, while the visitors also stayed mean in defence as goalkeeper Angela Buckley remained largely untested.

Dempster did well to trap the ball under her spell and let fly from range just after the half-hour mark, forcing a low save from the Greenisland goalkeeper, while Marshall curled one not far over the crossbar after an astute give-and-go with Erin Hennity on 33 minutes.

But Marshall wasn't to be denied a minute later. After Dempster fired in a tantalising cross from the left, the Greenisland defender got in and played it back to the goalkeeper who palmed it away – but only as far as the in-form Marshall, who slammed in from close range for Bangor's third of the night.

Greenisland offered a threat when a free-kick on 40 minutes wasn't fully cleared, and Nicole Wheeldon's shot was deflected inches past Buckley's left-hand post for a corner – the resulting delivery from the right was a dangerous one but couldn't get a touch inside the box.

And on 45 minutes, they pulled one back – a dipping long-range effort from Rachel Patterson that nestled in the back of Buckley's net to make it 3-1 at half-time.

Bangor got the action back under way and could almost have restored their three-goal cushion within a minute of the restart – Marshall chasing a hat-trick and breaking through down the left, but she saw her shot saved by the Greenisland goalkeeper who recovered before Stewart could latch on to the rebound.

The Seasiders continued to maintain their intensity and work hard, and they threatened again through Marshall who forced an astute near-post parry from the Greenisland stopper that resulted in a right-sided corner on 57 minutes. That corner found Stewart at the back post, but she was caught unsighted and the danger was subsequently cleared.

Greenisland then won a corner before the hour mark on the right, and it had to be dealt with as they looked to reduce it to a one-goal game. Emi Wynne was, meanwhile, bringing an fresh injection of energy on the left wing as he came on as a half-time substitute.

The hosts let fly with a long-range effort on 64 minutes that was on target and had to be saved by Buckley, while another distance drive was turned behind for a corner which was eventually cleared – but the momentum was with Greenisland at this stage in the game.

Robyn McFadden replaced Dempster in a change up top for the visitors with 20 minutes to play, but Greenisland's high-pressing approach was still a constant as Bangor looked to the likes of Stewart, Marshall and Wynne to lead the charge going forward.

Donnan forced a corner down the left on 76 minutes and Stewart took command, though an increasing breeze saw it turned in towards the side netting, but it was a cue for the game to peter out somewhat as Bangor got to grips with the pressure being put on them.

Greenisland did, though, earn a free-kick on 85 minutes which home captain Yasmin Craig took command off, forcing a save from Buckley at her right-hand post, while Marshall almost caught the Greenisland goalkeeper off her line as her shot had to be blocked.

And in the second minute of stoppage-time, Jess applied the coup de grace with an exceptional long-range free-kick that picked out the top left corner to make it four, with Bangor doing enough in what remained to see out the contest and take home the three points.

MATCH REPORT – Ballymena United Women 0-1 Bangor FC Ladies
Northern Ireland Women's Football Association Championship, Wednesday 8th April
Goalscorer: Amber Dempster (41')

Bangor FC Ladies made it back-to-back wins and clean sheets to start the 2026 NIWFA Championship season with a 1-0 victory over Ballymena United Women at the Warden Street Showgrounds on Wednesday night.

The Bangor line-up featured three changes from the opening night win over Strabane Athletic a fortnight ago, with goalkeeper Angela Buckley, Toni Stewart and Robyn McFadden coming in for Amy Wignall, Emi Wynne and Jodie Shannon in the line-up. Janine Jess was also handed the captain's armband for this duel, partnering Sarah Crooks as the centre-backs.

Amber Dempster set the ball rolling for the away side and they threatened to break through just a couple of minutes in when Olivia Marshall looked to race in behind, but a last-ditch intervention by a recovering Ballymena defender denied her the chance to get in at goal.

Buckley got down low to save from a tame Ballymena shot from distance for her first involvement on eight minutes, while Amanda Morton then got an effort on target from Naomi Donnan's free-kick that Ballymena goalkeeper Ciara McCoy-Thompson gathered on 12 minutes.

Marshall then placed an effort wide of the post with 17 minutes gone, with McFadden then drawing a claim from McCoy-Thompson a couple of minutes later from her looping effort from the edge of the box.

Leah Robinson was next to force the Sky Blues stopper into action as her shot from distance was held, while Bangor enjoyed perhaps their best chance to that point shortly after when Morton placed just past the post after beating an off-her-line McCoy-Thompson to the ball.

After that, there was a lull with goalmouth action at a premium as the game became more of a battle in the middle of the park, with Dempster seeing some tentative penalty appeals waved away after she went down in the box six minutes out from the interval, before Donnan's tantalising cross from the left was just placed wide by Marshall as Bangor tried to step things up.

And on 41 minutes, the breakthrough arrived – Robinson's cross from the right connected to in the box by Dempster, who turned goalward and fired into the top left corner with an astute finish to put Bangor in front.

Donnan then drew a strong save in first-half stoppage-time as McCoy-Thompson beat the ball away with her feet, with Stewart then seeing her on target shot saved as the visitors saw out their lead until the interval.

Ballymena got the second period under way, though Bangor had the first look at goal with Emi Wynne – introduced at half-time – drawing a low save from McCoy-Thompson on 49 minutes after Marshall whipped a low cross in from the right. All in all, though, it continued to be tight with little chance creation to speak of early following the restart.

Ballymena did threaten on 65 minutes as Buckley was called upon to make a strong punch from an enticing cross near the byline, but the threat at either end continued to be few and far between as Bangor moved to a back three – Erin Boyle replacing Marshall for her first appearance of the season and slotting in between Jess and Sarah Crooks.

On 73 minutes, Bangor won a corner on the right that Dempster drilled in low towards Morton, who planted her first-time shot wide of the upright, and the visitors continued to string attacks together without really testing McCoy-Thompson in the Ballymena goal.

Wynne almost got in behind on 84 minutes but, like Marshall in the early knockings, was denied a run at goal by a well-timed Ballymena sliding challenge down the inside left channel, while Boyle performed a superb bit of last-ditch defending to deny the hosts on the break three minutes from the end of regulation.

Ballymena stepped up the pressure going into stoppage-time as Bangor looked to see the game out – and that's just what they did to seal the points.
