Another unpopular decision by Barnsley Council.
📰 NEWS: Plans for 765 New Homes in Hoyland North Move Forward 🏡
Plans to build 765 homes in Hoyland North have taken a step closer to reality, with Barnsley Council confirming a planning application is expected following further technical work by a developer.
At a full council meeting on 24 July, Councillor Robin Franklin (Cabinet Spokesperson for Regeneration and Culture) revealed that a developer with “firm interest” is working closely with Barnsley’s housing team and has already carried out extensive ground investigations on the site.
The Hoyland North site – located just north of Hoyland Common – is a long-term priority in the Barnsley Local Plan, adopted in 2019. The current vision includes: 🏘️ Around 765 new homes
🏭 37 hectares of employment land
🌿 Green infrastructure & community facilities
🏏 A central cricket oval and pavilion (location yet to be agreed)
🚶 Safe links to local services and jobs
The Hoyland North Masterplan Framework, developed to guide this major development, focuses on health, biodiversity, sustainability and recreation – aiming to create a mixed-use, high-quality community that integrates with existing neighbourhoods.
However, many in our community will remember that the masterplans (for Hoyland North, South and West) faced strong local opposition in 2019–2020 — especially regarding the scale of development, loss of green space, and relocation of sports facilities.
📣 Residents will have the chance to give feedback on the site layout and design through the formal planning process once the application is submitted later this year.
We’ll keep you updated as this progresses.
