Lastly, a new discovery in probably our favourite Dartmoor town of Chagford: The Chagford Inn.
Those of you who either know us, or follow us on social media, will have noticed that we regularly visit Chagford, and then, almost inevitably, The Three Crowns.
Chagford has it all as far as we are concerned: independent retailers, cafes, delicatessens, art shops, a vibrant, friendly community, all surrounded by stunning Dartmoor scenery, and, not forgetting 4 great pubs: The Three Crowns; The Globe Inn, the Ring O' Bells, and The Chagford Inn. And this winter, for the first time, we went and visited The Chagford Inn after it won South West Pub of the Year from the Trencherman's Guide.
What a find, hard to believe that it's the first time we've stepped inside this pub despite living in Devon for 8 years and being regular visitors to the town. Oh well, better late than never.
And what a great venue for celebrating my 60th birthday!

Next: The Dartmoor Inn (yes, another Dartmoor Inn) but this one a little nearer from Crossways, near Lydford on the A386.
You could step out from this pub's car park straight onto the moors and walk for miles. And you might need to, in order to walk off the superb food that you've just consumed. One of those establishments that's decided to take it's food well beyond pub grub, while still retaining that country pub feel.
Nearby is Lydford Gorge, at wonderful piece of wild estate, owned by the National Trust and where can be found, after a beautiful walk, the White Lady Waterfall, a 30m vertical cascade of water.

Next on our: "what on earth did you do through the long Winter of 2026" we give to you 2 very different Dartmoor pubs: one full of quirky character, the other a foodie lovers/country walker's dream.
So first: The Highwayman Inn, Sourton. Even from the road it just draws the eye, and once you step inside, I can almost garauntee that you will want to explore before you even sit down. A picture paints a thousand words (and you'd use a few thousand just to describe this place!) so best you just look at the attached photos.
I wouldnt go here for the food, a limited menu delivers okay food, but the setting...wow.

Next up was the The Exmoor Forest Inn. A beautifully renovated inn, with a choice of tastefully decorated spacious rooms in which to drink with the friendly locals or eat some rather splendid food. To burn all of that off, nearby is the start of a fantastic walk along a well maintained footpath which follows the River Barle to Cow Castle (not really a castle) and beyond, taking in some stunning Exmoor scenery.
Located in Simonsbath it's a very enjoyable rural 40 minute drive from Crossways.

So, our "research" over the winter months has added some new additions to our recommended pubs.
First off is The Dartmoor Inn at Merrivale - a bit of a drive (a little over an hour) but so worth it for the best steaks we've eaten outside of South Africa (our 'steak' benchmark) and the best fruit crumble EVER!
Great walks in the immedaite area and National Trust Lydford Gorge is also nearby with its 30m Whitelady Waterfall.

At last, after what felt like a seemingly endless Winter, the warmer, sunnier, and increasingly longer days are here.
That's not to say that we, or our guests over January, February, March and April, didn't make the best of the deep Winter months.
For us, it's a time of log fires, book reading, board games, long walks on almost deserted beaches or across the moors (in weather appropriate attire of course!) and discovering new country pubs and places to eat. And, as always the hot tubs which are great in almost any weather!
The following posts will detail some of our winter activities before posting something more Spring-like.

North Devon spots beat Cornwall in new ranking of 'best place to visit in 2026' - Devon Live

North Devon arguably rivals Cornwall, having been named one of the best places to visit this year, with its coastal charm, surfing opportunities, picturesque towns and affordable seaside escape

Great news if you're a National Trust member- free parking at Woolacombe! A pleasant surpise when we visited yesterday to enjoy the heatwave on this world class beach.😄🥰
Marine Drive at Woolacombe has recently been taken over by the NT. Plenty of parking spaces that actually overlook the beach itself. Bit of a hike down to the beach, along sandy footpaths, but when other car parks in Woolacombe and Putsborough charge upwards of £15 a day, then it will prove popular.
Another reason to get membership!

A great day at the North Devon Show yesterday with all of the usual: beautifully presented farm animals; horse and dog shows; country skills demonstrations; crafts and agricultural machinery...and, best of all, great local food and drink, with the highlight being this steak and ale pie from LJ's Pantry ...lovely! Luckily I got in early, Lora soon sold out! No wonder we get our scones from here!
