An autumn glow up for today’s check in 🧡

Our guest family can look forward to plenty of play equipment in our Sensory Corner, including:

- indoor swing
- trampoline
- whizzy seat
- cocoon chair
- hula hoops, crawl tunnel and floor mat
- box of fidget toys and games
- plus some fun balloons!

We have also provided the mini wall laser, waterproof mattress, extra blackout blind and lockable nappy bin for our extra safe, calming single room.

In addition to our unique safety adaptations and sensory equipment, we’ve provided delicious award winning millionaire cakes, sensory sweets and chocolate Roman coins to enjoy on arrival - yum!

Sungate guests also receive an app full of autism friendly places to visit in and around Bath when they book a stay.
Our World Heritage city is just beautiful at this time of year - we’re sure our guest family will have a wonderful holiday 💙

Sungate’s autism friendly adaptations - WATER FEATURES! 🚿💙

Being a neurodivergent family, we know all too well how water can evoke strong reactions in autistic children and adults, including joy, comfort, anxiety, or repetitive behaviours.

Water can both regulate and disregulate autistic people, and so it’s important that Sungate’s water features meet a range of sensory and safety needs.

These include:

• Clearly labelled hot and cold taps in the kitchen, with noise reducing composite sink

• Sensor tap in the main bathroom, to help prevent flooding. This tap can also help to reduce water anxiety, with some children calling it the ‘magic tap’!

• Lockable bathroom and shower room

• Thermostatically controlled taps in both the bath and
shower room, to help prevent scalding

• Quiet Mark fans and soft close toilets for those who are sensitive to noise

• bathroom underfloor heating and heated towel rails for comfort

• warm white lighting to regulate

• Powder Rain shower in the small wet room which is gentle and soft, for those who are sensory sensitive

• lockable utility room with washer dryer and room to hang laundry

• Complimentary aromatherapy vegan hand wash and shower gel

So families, carers and loved ones can relax and enjoy their break at Sungate, knowing everybody’s needs have been met 💙

Check in day and Sungate is looking super cosy 💙

In addition to Sungate’s unique autism friendly safety and sensory adaptations, our guest family have requested extra equipment (at no extra charge), including:

- weighted blanket and white noise machine
- lockable nappy bin
- waterproof mattress
- Sensory Corner with whizzy seat, trampoline, swing, cocoon chair, floor mat, crawl tunnel, hula hoops and sensory toy box

Our lounge bay window has some cosy seasonal cushions too 🧡

Bath is beautiful in autumn, with Bath City Farm just a short walk away, the World Heritage The Roman Baths 10 minutes away, plus plenty of other nearby parks and attractions within easy reach of Sungate. Autism friendly places to visit can be found in our app, available when you book a stay.

Did you know that guests receive an app, downloadable to their phone, full of autism friendly places to visit in and around Bath, when they book a stay?

As a neurodivergent family of five (plus dog!), we’ve included many of our own personal favourites in our app, and guests’ recommendations too 💙

Recommendations change over the seasons, so that you can plan your stay.

October highlights include:

🍁 Scented ghost tours of Bath city. These family friendly tours are a multi-sensory experience!

🍁 Revolting Romans trail at The Roman Baths. A lighthearted walk through the history of the Baths. There are audio tours that the kids can listen to on headphones, sensory packs and quiet spaces for ND visitors. The Roman Baths have also recently introduced £1 entry for adults receiving Universal credit, pension credit or ESA. Carers go free

🍁 Westonbirt arboretum Room on the Broom and Magic Maple trails. The arboretum is wonderfully spacious, with family and dog friendly trails plus ‘relaxed’ light trails for ND families

🍁 Longleat is perfect for those who like car rides, and want to try the drive through safari. There’s also a boat safari and train rides too. The Shawn the Sheep puzzle trail is fun for kids to solve on their visit, plus sensory maps are available for visitors

🍁 Avon Valley railway have a variety of steam train rides, where you can book a whole carriage car just for your family if you want to. The chocolate steam train includes a ride past an old chocolate factory, and a sweet treat at the end!

🍁 Relaxed theatre performances of Rapunzel at The Egg. Shows are ‘open door’ performances, so members of the audience can come and go as they please, and latecomers can be admitted at any time. Lighting is raised, sound levels lowered, and a visual story is available. The Egg also has a ‘breakout space’ available as a quiet area of the theatre for anyone who needs time out but still wants to see the show

🍁 Hawk walks and owl encounters at The Bird of Prey centre - these smaller events include whole day access to the centre, giving families flexibility to plan their day.

Sungate autism friendly adaptations - LIGHT SWITCHES!

At Sungate, we bring our lived experience, plus feedback from other neurodivergent families’ into our unique house design and autism friendly adaptations.

This includes making lighting and light switches both safe and sensory💡💙

We know that some autistic people are sensitive to light, which is why Sungate has warm white lighting throughout and a soothing, colour changing, child safe fireplace in the lounge.

The twin bedroom has a galaxy projector and secure neon lights. Bedrooms are also fitted with dimmer switches to give guests more control over their environment.

We also know that some autistic children and adults (ours included) like to repeatedly switch lights on and off. This can be unsafe, frustrating, and exhausting, particularly in the middle of the night! To help, we have control switches in the kitchen so that the bedroom lights can be turned off remotely if need be. Sungate also has a lockable light switch cover in the single room, and tamper proof bedroom lights plug covers in the twin room.

As a safe and fun alternative, we provide a fidget box of visual and light toys, including a specially made light switch fidget board for our guests to enjoy.

So families, carers and loved ones can relax and enjoy their break at Sungate, knowing everybody’s needs have been met 💙

We love it when our families share their holiday photos with us, and this particular photo of recent guest Laurence in his favourite spot - the Sungate bay window seat - warmed our hearts so much we just had to share it with all of you! 🥰 🥰
