What do you reckon?

Where does the North actually begin? 🤔

Depending on who you ask, you may get a completely different answer. We've drawn four lines on the map – which one is right in your view?

🔴 Line A: The Watford Gap
To many Londoners, the North begins the second you hit this M1 motorway service station in Northamptonshire. Yes, really. To anyone from up here, this is of course considered as the South, but it is the classic geographical dividing line used by many people down south.

🟡 Line B: Sheffield & Manchester
The government thinks this is the North – hence the new PM's office in Manchester. But are they truly Northern, or just Midlanders with better PR?

🟢 Line C: The River Tees
This option presents the North as beginning once you cross the Tees, placing you in proper Northern territory.

🔵 Line D: The River Tyne
This is the stricter option, defining the North only after you cross the Tyne.

3 Northumberland walks we probably shouldn’t be sharing 🤫

The guidebooks will point you straight to the main castle car parks. We say head a little further off the beaten track.

1. Ross Sands: Park at the farm and take the mile-long track down to the sea. Your reward is an untouched coastline and the best views of Lindisfarne.

2. The Cheviot Hills: Ditch the coastal routes for a day and head inland into the National Park. It is wild, rugged, and you can hike for hours without bumping into another soul. On a clear day you can see right out to sea and even Cumbria and Scotland.

3. St Cuthbert’s Cave: Follow the footsteps of the monks who carried St Cuthbert’s remains away from Viking raids. The sandstone overhangs are incredible up close and the views over Holy Island are beautiful.
