William Morras, Durham Farmboy to House of Representatives, a Pioneer's Tale.
To add to the History of County Durham in History Month something should be said about the people who left our County to seek a better life elsewhere in the world. One such was William Morras.
William Morras left Edge Knoll Farm near Hamsterley in the Durham Dales in 1849 aged 21. He later married a girl from Bishop Auckland, Elizabeth Jacques in 1852.
Details of William Morras' travels are documented in the Durham Archives.
Eventually he bought land near Illyria in Fayette County Iowa and after many hardships including agricultural depressions, hard winters and hot summers he carved out, from virgin land, a successful farm and became a highly respected member of the Fayette community. So much so that he moved up the political ladder from Town Clerk to eventually becoming Member of the House of Representatives for Illyria.
Not bad for a Durham Farm Lad.
