Almost a century ago, a community lost its land, its road, its chapel and part of its history beneath the waters of Llyn Trawsfynydd.

Around 20 properties were flooded. Farms disappeared. Footpaths were swallowed. Even part of the ancient Sarn Helen Roman road was drowned when the reservoir was created between 1924 and 1928.

In return, the people of Trawsfynydd were given a promise.

That promise was the footbridge stretching a quarter of a mile across Wales’ second largest lake.

Now that promise is under threat.

The bridge was built as mitigation for everything the village sacrificed. It linked families. It helped children get to school safely. It gave residents access to land and community life without dangerous detours. It became more than steel and lattice girders. It became a symbol of fairness.

Since 2022 it has been closed due to structural issues. The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Nuclear Restoration Service now say demolition is planned, subject to consent from Eryri National Park Authority.

A replacement could cost around Β£3 million. Restoration has been deemed unviable.

But here is the bigger question.

When a community gives up its land for national infrastructure, is a 100 year legacy too much to maintain.

Local councillor Iwan Jones says the site has generated millions over the decades through hydro power and nuclear operations. The bridge was not a luxury. It was compensation. It was chosen over other incentives at the time. It was the community’s deal.

Today, children who once crossed safely must walk along the busy A470. School trips that used to go across the bridge are now considered too dangerous. Tourism has taken a hit. Local businesses feel it. Nearly 500 people, half the village, have signed a petition.

This is not nostalgia. It is about responsibility.

If the bridge is removed without replacement, what message does that send to communities asked to sacrifice for national projects.

Wales2Win stands with the people of Trawsfynydd.

This is about heritage.
This is about safety.
This is about honouring commitments made almost a century ago.

Communities should not be abandoned.
