Brassica Update! It started off well, then looked like a complete disaster, and at one point we were wondering whether to reseed the whole field.

Thankfully, we decided to leave it alone, and I’m pleased to say it’s looking pretty good now! The kale is up past my knees, the weeds have died back and, apart from a few hungry caterpillars, it’s looking healthy.

Looks like we’ll have a decent crop for the lambs to graze later in the year… unless I get my way and put some cattle on it instead! 😂🐂🐂

Never a dull Sunday morning! Started off feeding the cattle, then spotted a Facebook post about some escaped sheep in Priddy… which, of course, turned out to be ours!

Got the dog and off we went. Sheep safely back where they belong, and now I’m out checking the rest of the flock on the Mendips.

Still, when you get views like this, there are worse ways to spend a Sunday morning! ☀

Earlier this year, we planted oats and red clover with the intention of making winter feed for the cattle. The weather had other ideas, so instead we grazed our lambs on it over the summer.

Now we’re trying something different. We’ve drilled a grass seed mix into the existing red clover, in the hope of establishing a new grass ley without having to start again in the spring.

If it works, happy days! If not, well, farming is all about trying new things and seeing what works.

A day off means different things to different people here at Warren Farm! 🐄🐑

Ollie’s off shearing for a few days (his idea of time off!), while I spent yesterday at the South West Dairy Show at the Bath & West Showground.

A cracking day catching up with friends and colleagues, seeing some new ideas and innovations, and doing an awful lot of talking! The mood was a little subdued with milk prices as they are, but still a great day out.

Back to it this morning, checking on the cattle and moving them around our mob grazing paddocks. We’re still experimenting with this approach, so we’ll see how it goes!

I was a little later getting out this morning, and I think it’s fair to say these guys noticed! They certainly weren’t shy about letting me know that breakfast was overdue… and the chickens were just as keen. 😂🐔

Last week Kate and I hosted an evening for the Mendip Hills National Landscape volunteers. We cooked up some Warren Farm meat, a few other bits, and some very nice desserts. Finished up on the glamping site with a quiz and campfire. Was a lovely evening.

After working with the sheep this morning, I’m out getting ready for one of our autumn projects.

We’ll be putting in around 700 metres of new water pipe, a new fence line and planting 3,000 - 3,500 trees in this field, ready for outwintering the cattle.

First job though - finding the existing water💧 pipes with a couple of trusty welding rods, so we know exactly what we’re dealing with before the mole plough goes through!

Plenty to keep us busy this autumn. 🌳🐄

A bit of sheep FOMO at Warren Farm today! 🐑😂

I’ve been out checking some of our sheep on temporary grazing, and a couple have decided the grass must be greener on the other side of the electric fence.

Of course, once one gets through, another follows… and before you know it, FOMO kicks in and they all want to know what they’re missing!

New battery, new fencer and everything back where it should be. Hopefully they’ve got the message this time. 🤞🐑
