Are you an Outlander fan? Would you rather travel independently?
Here’s a day by day itinerary just for you!
Edinburgh: TOP TIP!
Book a Premier Inn in any city - always good value and spotless.
Day 1: Visit The Royal Mile where you will see the location of Jamie’s print shop. There are signs everywhere - you won’t miss it. Lots of mid-range eateries and coffee shops.
Day 2: Hopetoun House - home of The Duke of Sandringham. Do this in the morning and stop by Midhope Castle, or Lallybroch as we know it in the afternoon. Pretty derelict, but good photo op.
Day 3: https://www.visitfalkirk.com/plan-your-visit/itineraries/outlander-film-locations-trail/
Some good ideas here for day 3 - see link below.
Day 4: Leave Edinburgh and head north to Culross in Fife where you will find Cranesmuir, including Geillis Duncan’s house - the external and internal locations are authentic although muddled up to suit! eg Geillis’ parlour is actually part of the Palace! You will see the court house and Culross Palace is instantly recognisable as Castle Leoch which appears in Season 1,2 and 4 and a visit to the palace’s medieval garden is a must.
Have lunch in The Red Lion pub with its very own interesting history. Good food and service, but book ahead in the summer. If you’re on a budget, just book a Premier Inn in Dunfermline or if you have a bit more cash, stay at The Keavil House Hotel in Crossford which is halfway between Culross and Dunfermline.
Day 5: Visit Falkland, still in Fife. According to Outlander, this is Inverness, except it isn’t. Here you will find Mrs Baird’s BnB and the monument where Jamie’s ghost appears. Lots to see in this beautiful, historic village so make a day of it.
Day 6: Time to head north, detour via Doune Castle to see a different version of Castle Leoch. Outlander, Game of Thrones, Monty Python and The Holy Grail all filmed here!
Still Day 6 - head north to The Firs, Blair Atholl! Explore Faskally woods where you will recognise the Mohawk Native American settings! You can also follow the River Tilt from Blair Atholl to discover locations using The Mandalorian series.
Day 7 Craigh na Dun and Kinloch Rannoch - unmissable!
Day 8 Head north to the real Inverness, but follow the signs for Culloden. A magnificent visitor centre and atmospheric landscape awaits. Visit the graves of the clans who were buried unnamed, but according to the tartan they wore.
Day 9 Head south via Glencoe, the wild, unforgiving landscape as seen in the opening credits.
Day 10 Back through the “stones” to reality!
You really need 14 days to appreciate all the other beauties that Scotland has to offer. Feel free to get in touch for any local knowledge and tips, Pauline 😉
