Our closest country pub, , is expanding its opening hours from Wednesday 8th July.

They will now be open for:

Wednesday lunch & dinner
Thursday lunch & dinner
Friday lunch & dinner
Saturday lunch & dinner
Sunday lunch

They are also offering a Country Lunch Menu on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday lunchtimes, plus a Thursday evening Butcher’s Night with steak, hand-cut chips, house salad and a choice of sauce.

This is such handy news for guests staying with us at The Victorian Barn Dorset, especially those looking for a cosy country pub meal nearby during their stay.

Tiny cygnets, sunshine and one of Dorset’s loveliest days out 🦢

We visited Abbotsbury Swannery recently and it’s such a special place at this time of year, while the cygnets are still small.

A lovely one to add to your list if you’re staying in Dorset over the next few weeks.

Definitely worth visiting before the cygnets get much bigger.

This was for a group stay in Woodside Retreat, and it means so much when guests notice the things we work hard on like space for everyone, plenty to do and trying to be helpful before and during their stay.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝘂𝘀 𝘀𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴…

A recent guest who stayed in Plumtree emailed to ask which mattress and topper we use, because she said it was so comfortable that she woke up with no back ache for the first time in a very long time.

Sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest difference during a stay, a comfy bed, a peaceful night’s sleep and waking up feeling properly rested.

That’s exactly what we want guests to feel when they stay here.

Sunrise walks from the doorstep 🌅

I took this on my dog walk this morning, with our cows in the field and the fishing lakes just in the distance.

Imagine being able to wander out for a walk like this during your stay, without having to get in the car first.

Fields, lakes, views, fresh Dorset air… and usually a few curious cows watching you go past.

Notice for anglers 🎣

Oak Lake is currently closed for fishing as the carp are spawning.

We expect this to be for around two weeks, but we’ll keep an eye on things and update once it is ready to reopen.

Park Lake and Alder Lake remain open as usual.

A bit of work going on down at the lakes recently 🎣

Our fishery manager, Terry has been busy tidying around the lakes, clearing some dead trees and plants, adding lilies to Alder Lake and planting new trees to replace some of the old ones.

We’ve also added a couple of hard-standing spots around Oak Lake, so anglers have the option of fishing from grass or from a firmer base, depending on what suits them.

It’s all part of keeping the lakes looking good and making them better to use, whether guests are here for a proper fishing break or just enjoy a walk down by the water.

It’s such a peaceful part of the estate and it’s lovely to see it being cared for.

𝗜’𝗺 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗯𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝘂𝘀…

…but it did look like it was ending right by the barn 🌈

I took this after one of those random heavy showers where five minutes later the sun comes out and everything looks completely different.

The grass looked so green, the buildings were glowing a bit and the rainbow appeared in just the right place.

Maybe that’s the Dorset version of a pot of gold 😂

Sometimes it’s hard to sum up The Victorian Barn Dorset in just a few words.

We’re often described as holiday cottages, which we are… but we’re also a bit more than that.

For larger families and groups, it can be really hard to find somewhere where everyone can stay, eat, relax and spend proper time together.

That’s where we’re a little different.

We have accommodation across the estate, Osborne Hall for bigger get-togethers, Woodside Retreat for group stays, private hot tubs, an indoor heated swimming pool, sauna, games rooms, fishing lakes, a children’s play area and countryside walks straight from the door.

Osborne Hall is shown empty here, but we can set it up with tables and chairs depending on the group, so it works well for meals, celebrations and time together.

It’s quite a special mix, and one we’re really proud of.

And although we’re very well set up for larger groups, we still have smaller cottages and apartments for families, couples and quieter countryside breaks too.

I wasn’t expecting this email today…

We received it from a recent guest who stayed in Leopold and it’s one of those messages that reminds us exactly why we do what we do.

“Thank you for a fantastic weekend staying in Leopold. The property was beautifully equipped throughout, and the facilities on site were second to none. We couldn't keep the boys out of the swimming pool or away from the pool room, while my sister-in-law and I were big fans of the hot tub, the stunning views and tranquil setting.

A perfect weekend spent catching up and chilling out with family who we don't get to see very often.
