Birding at Butterwell 🐦

A birdwatcher’s paradise on the banks of the River Camel, where ponds, wetlands, ancient woodland and fragments of temperate rainforest create a rich mosaic of habitats for wildlife.

From kingfishers flashing along the river to owls at dusk, there’s always something to spot here at Butterwell Farm. We even had an osprey stop by once 🦅

If you’re a keen birder, take a look at the dedicated birdwatching page on our website where we’ve listed the many species recorded here over the years.

What will you spot on your next visit? ✨

Bluebell season is slowly drawing to a close here at Butterwell Farm… and what a show they’ve given us this spring 🪻

For a few magical weeks our 20 acre ancient woodland is transformed into a sea of electric blue, carpeting the valley floor, riverbanks and winding paths beneath the trees. Bluebells are one of the indicators of ancient woodland — a sign of land that has remained wooded for centuries — and it’s part of what makes Butterwell such a special place.

Beyond the woods, our incredible Cornish hedgerows are absolutely bursting to life right now too — jam packed with bluebells, wild garlic, unfurling fern fronds, pink campion and clouds of cow parsley. A complete riot of colour and texture everywhere you look.

These ancient habitats are home to an extraordinary diversity of rare flora and fauna, with mosses and lichens clinging to old bark, birdsong echoing through the valley and wildlife quietly moving along the river. Every season here feels immersive — nature unfolding around you day by day.

As the bluebells begin to fade, the landscape shifts once again into early summer greens, foxgloves begin to rise through the undergrowth, evenings stretch longer over the valley and the river glows beneath the trees.

One beautiful season closing, another just beginning 🌿✨

Sleeps 2-6

Nestled into the valley, immersed in nature, with wildlife quite literally on your doorstep 🌿

From soft morning light through the windows to the river below and sheep grazing in the fields, and beautiful sunsets on the patio, every angle tells the same story — calm, comfort, and connection to the land.

A place where old stone meets simple comfort, and time seems to slow down just enough to notice everything around you ✨
