The Boscombe Surf Reef
Boscombe’s artificial surf reef was reopened a few weeks ago, coinciding with the opening launch of the Coastal Activity Park. The reef is located to the east of Boscombe’s Pier and is incorporated into the list of facilities that enable over 30 activities to take place within the Park.
The artificial reef was installed on Boscombe’s shoreline in November 2009 which, with the right weather conditions provided waves suitable for surfing and other water sports. New businesses helped to enhance Boscombe Seafront as they opened near to the reef - and to this day it continues to be a desirable stretch of seafront to visit.
In March 2011 the artificial reef was deemed unfit for purpose, having been damaged by a passing boat’s propeller. Having gone through rigorous health and safety analysis and testing the surf reef is now open for public use.
Today the artificial reef is being used for a wide range of activities, depending on the weather conditions. Surfing, sea kayaking and adventurous stand-up paddle boarders use the reef when there are waves, while on calmer days guided snorkelling tours visit the site. Locals have been amazed by what can be discovered while snorkelling the reef- now populated with a while host of marine inhabitants.
