We (Bob and Liz Matthews) bought Lorne House in November 2016. We had been looking for a B&B for a couple of years and were despairing of finding anything suitable when we found Lorne House. It was beautifully decorated and well designed, and it was immediately evident that much thought and attention to detail had gone into it - we had to have it! We moved in, in the midst of the Bath Christmas Ma
rket season, with a full house of guests on day one. We are delighted that our guests like Lorne House as much as we do. Lorne House was the childhood home of the Reverend Wilbert Vere Awdry, who famously wrote the Thomas the Tank Engine Stories. He lived at Lorne House (then known as Journey's End) from the age of 8 - 18. The Great Western Railway line runs behind Lorne House, emerging from Middlehill Tunnel before plunging into the depths of Brunel's famous Box Tunnel some few hundred yards further on. Reverend Awdry claimed that it was listening to the steam trains on this line of track from his bedroom at Lorne House that influenced his stories in later life. Lorne House is ideally placed for visiting Bath and the local areas of historic and cultural interest. We are close to the National Trust village of Lacock, Castle Combe, widely known as the prettiest village in England, Corsham, a location for the recent BBC series of Poldark as well as Bradford on Avon and Avebury. Having lived in the area for 17 years before moving to Lorne House we are very happy to pass on our tips for making the most of this area (including how to avoid the traffic queues in Bath!),
