During the atmospheric months of autumn and winter, the Fog House at the Fife Arms is transformed into a beautiful Swiss Alpine Fondue Hut.

Overlooking the courtyard and warmed by a crackling fireplace, this wonderful pop-up restaurant is the perfect place to relax after time spent exploring the romantic village of Braemar and the frost-covered landscapes of the Cairngorms.

Our traditional Swiss Fondue pairs Emmental and Gruyère cheese with roasted garlic, white w**e and kirsch, while our Scottish Fondue combines three Scottish cheeses – Isle of Mull Cheddar, Tain Minger and Anster – with roasted garlic, nutmeg and Cairngorm ale. For something sweet, dive into a rich 70% Chocolate Fondue, lifted by warming Fife Arms wh**ky and served with waffles, pears, clementines and marshmallows.

The roar of stags in the glens is a quintessential part of autumn in the Scottish Highlands. The rut takes place from mid-September to early November, with red deer battling for dominance during their mating season. The sound of clashing horns and bellowing stags echoes across the hillsides at this time of year, with the most activity taking place in the atmospheric hours of dawn and dusk.

The final day of Braemar Literary Festival began with an illuminating talk presented in collaboration with the Women’s Prize Trust, featuring two exciting debut authors - Niamh Ní Mhaoileoin and Lorna Elcock - in discussion with chair and award-winning author Kiran Millwood Hargrave.

Next, Val McDermid and Jo Sharp discussed the tale of Scotland’s only trading colony in their novel ‘This Door of the Seas’ in conversation with Louise Welsh. Lachlan, Ewan and Jamie Maclean then transported us to a rowing boat on the Pacific, sharing the inspiring and record-breaking adventure captured in their new book, ’Three Brothers in a Boat’, in conversation with Heather Suttie.

After visiting children in Braemar School for a special preview on Friday, the festival ended on a high in the Braemar Beddie Baa, with Hugh Bonneville reading from his next novel for children, ‘Rory Sparkes and the Spy who Loved Tea’. The perfect way to finish a feel-good, varied, and inspiring literary festival in the heart of the Highlands.

Yesterday, we enjoyed a series of fascinating talks by leading writers, thinkers and creative voices at Braemar Literary Festival 2026.

The day began with Tom Parker Bowles in conversation with Manuela and Iwan Wirth as they shared the story of the upcoming Hauser & Wirth publication, ‘A Cookbook for Iwan’. Next, Jojo Moyes explored romantic fiction and her latest novel, ‘We All Live Here’, with Vicki Perrin, CEO of The Queen’s Reading Room.

Chitra Ramaswamy and Ali Stoner - the Roving Haggis - talked all things Scottish cooking, before we delved into crime fiction and thrillers with Louise Welsh in conversation with Zoë Strachan.

Manuela Wirth, Celia Pym, Sarah Wright, Claudia Delgado and Catherine Goodman then explored the celebration of creativity in ‘The Forgotten Her Story’, before the day concluded with Bonnie Garmus introducing us to her much-anticipated second novel, ‘Peck & Peck’, in conversation with Vicki Perrin.

Last night, Braemar Literary Festival began with a truly special gala dinner at the Fife Arms.

Her Majesty, The Queen, together with speakers and guests, enjoyed a menu showcasing dishes from the upcoming publication ‘A Cookbook for Iwan’, prepared by Artfarm’s Culinary Director Ben Orpwood and the Fife Arms. Originally created by Manuela Wirth as a gift for her husband Iwan, the book features over 200 recipes gathered from the personal culinary repertoires of contemporary artists, curators, chefs, and collectors.

The evening was filled with culture and connection, brought to life by a beautiful reading by Aberdeenshire poet Sheena Blackhall, and concluded with a warming dram of wh**ky by The Glenrothes.

The perfect start to a festival that celebrates words, stories, and the cultural heritage of Scotland.
