Downie’s Cottage is thought to be have been the highest working ‘croft’ in Scotland located high on the shoulder of Morrone with breathtaking views over the village of Braemar and the Dee valley in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. The property was abandoned sometime between the wars and although the steading was damaged by fire many years ago, the house remained largely as an undisturbed

time capsule complete with box beds and victorian christmas cards. On discovering this gem Historic Scotland has determined it is a building of national importance and has listed it as Category A and it is currently being restored to provide a new lease of life for the 21st Century.

For those of you who missed the Doors Opens Days a few weeks ago, here are some photos of the Downie’s attic (normally closed off).
Lined with newspapers and posters from around 1890, there are 2 further boxbeds up there each with little shelves to put the occupant’s precious belongings eg little sweet tins containing buttons or thread, a bible, collections of letters etc.
The newspaper not only restricted drafts coming in through the heather thatch but provided some cheer and interest.
