One bedroom dog friendly holiday cottage on the edge of Exmoor, North Devon, 20 minute drive from the South West Coastal Path. Walking, Cycling, Wildlife

Swallows Roost is an ideal base to explore Devon, Somerset and Exmoor. We welcome Dog owners, walkers, cyclists or couples wanting a romantic break. Enjoy a relaxing break with great scenery perfectly suited to photographers, artists or those that just wish to be away from it all. We are rural but still within easy access of North Devon attractions and some of the best dog friendly beaches. ACTIVITIES ON SITE
Large exercise field for dogs to run and play off lead. 2 acre Secure Dog walking field, perfect for nervous or reactive dogs. LOCAL INTEREST
A Tumulas (Medieval burial mound) is located in the field next to us and the site of an old Medieval village can be seen across the valley.

Do you like to book your holidays early so you have something to look forwards to? Are you a last-minute booker? Or maybe a bit of both?

Right Dogs! You know that feeling at the end of your holiday when you really don’t want to go home? Your 2-legged companions start packing the bags and moving things towards the door, ready to pack the car. Well at Swallows Roost, that’s the best time to start a game of hide and seek and maybe try some avoidance strategies too.

What’s your dog’s favourite place to hide, there are plenty of options here at Swallows Roost apparently 😂, some of which Dexter tried at the end of his stay.

Under the bed is a good place to hide, especially if you are only small. Under the worktop in the boot room, or how about behind a door or curtain.

If you climb into your bed and refuse to move, that makes it difficult to pack you and the bed into the car, or maybe just sit in front of one of the doors so they can’t get in there.

Anyone else have a dog that doesn’t want their holiday to end?

Fancy a short break in Devon this Autumn? (Other dates available)

Swallows Roost is situated on the foothills of Exmoor in rural North Devon. The spacious one bedroom single story detached cottage sleeps up to 2 adults plus 3 dogs go FREE (Sorry no children or puppies). Swallows Roost has a king size bed with walk in wardrobe. A large bathroom with separate bath and shower and a large open plan kitchen/ diner & Sitting room overlooking our wild flower meadow and the valley beyond. There is a small enclosed garden with 4 foot fencing. Dogs plus their owners are made very welcome, dogs are allowed on furniture and in the bedroom.

Outside we are just as dog friendly with not one but two off-lead exercise fields on site including our 2 acre secure field with 6 foot fencing which is available for exclusive use. If you have a nervous or reactive dog, a dog with a high chase drive or one that has selective hearing or a bad recall then this exercise field will be perfect for you and we offer you one free session per day if required. The other off lead exercise field for cottage guests to use at any time of day has 4 foot fencing.

We had some stunning sunsets in North Devon over the weekend. We didn't manage to get photos of it but thankfully our lovely guests staying in the lodge took these gorgeous photos whilst sitting on the decking of Swallows Roost.

Do you get tempted by quiet beaches? North Devon has so many beautiful beaches to explore and enjoy and it's not uncommon to have a stretch of beach to yourself. Dexter and his owners certainly made the most of them during their 2 week September stay at Swallows Roost - Devon Banks

“Just wanted to share this as I think this is the biggest compliment from Dexter! He never settle’s and sleeps this quickly anywhere.”

Happy dogs mean happy owners and when a guest sends you pictures on the first evening of a chilled out dog on the sofa feeling right at home, we know we are doing something right at Swallows Roost.

The chilling out didn’t end with the first night either. Dexter slept in various positions including upside down and half hanging out of bed in various places around the property 😂. Not to forget the "I'm not asleep, I'm just resting my eyes" pose outside in the sunshine too. His days exploring North Devon, Exmoor and playing in the secure field really tired the little fellow out bless him.

4 fun facts about the bathroom at Swallows Roost.
1) You know that feeling when you get up for a night time p*e. You turn the light on so you can see what you're doing - The bright lights wake you up completely and then the noisy extractor fan kicks in. We thought of that problem and came up with the solution. We added a little wall light that works off a separate switch and has a dim bulb perfect for night time p*es and also sets the mood for relaxing baths.

2) Lots of people use Electric toothbrushes and lots of people forget to pack the charger when they go on holiday. Have no fear, we have a built in Toothbrush charging station just for those ocassions.

3) Steamed up mirrors are a thing of the past. Not only is the bathroom mirror fitted with it's own light, it also demists itself too when the light is switched on.

4)The bath is an eco bath and it's insulated meaning your bath water stays warmer for longer and you won't need to top it up. Of course there is a downside to this - you might not want to get out of the bath.

October is a great month to visit the Exmoor area and we still have spaces! 4 Reasons to visit Exmoor this Autumn -

✨Exmoor Dark Skies Festival (16th October - 1st November 2026) – Exmoor is a dark skies reserve so minimal light pollution to ruin your view of the stars on a clear night.

🦌Red Deer Rutting Season (Throughout late September and all of October) - Ever heard the “bark” or roar of a red deer in rutting season? It’s quite a distinct sound and there is a large heard of Red Deer that live in our area so it’s not unusual to hear or see the deer at this time of the year.

🌄Great Sunrises and Sunsets at a sensible time – watch the sun rise over Exmoor from our exercise fields or if you’re not an early bird, enjoy the sun setting from the comfort of the sofa or out on the decking.

🍂Everywhere looks so pretty outside with the colours of Autumn. This view over the valley never fails to look pretty at this time of year.
