Model Farm Country House offers self-catering accommodation for up to 25 people across 10 bedrooms

The house is ideal for large family parties and sensible hen do gatherings. It consists of an imposing Victorian front addition to a 17th century farmhouse. The self-catering house retains most of the original features such as, high moulded ceilings, marble fireplaces and wooden floors. The Period furniture matches the Victorian features although a modern kitchen and facilities have been added.

010 was our first year of business. Since then we have been continually improving the house and grounds. We have spent a lot of time landscaping the grounds, adding hundreds of trees, new flowerbeds, an orchard and a wildlife pond. We have also been busy decorating and updating the main house and buildings and now have 10 double/family bedrooms, 5 en-suite and 3 bathrooms that can sleep up to 25 people.

A reminder that we are part of the National Open Garden Scheme and will be reopening our gardens from 31st August every Monday - Friday (10 - 4pm) to 16th October. There are 4 acres of flat gardens, with wooded areas, orchard, lawns, wildflower meadows and wildlife ponds to enjoy, with seating throughout and the option to use the wild swimming pond. We also have plants for sale which our gardeners have propagated onsite. Admission is £5 each, children free. For further info about visiting us, go to www.modelfarm.com

On this day 112 years ago Model Farm went to auction at the Royal Clarence Hotel in Bridgwater.

Following the death of owner Francis Shepherd in 1911 (see earlier post) the estate reverted to his brother, Benjamin Cavill Shepherd, a successful draper and mercer who was living at Knowle Hall in Bawdrip. When Benjamin also passed away just two years later, on 20 May 1913, his trustees decided to sell up. The auction particulars were advertised - as we see here in this poster which is still displayed inside the house today.

In 1921, Elizabeth Shepherd, Francis' widow, was later found living with their daughter, Letitia, at 35 North Street. In 1925, Elizabeth was buried alongside Francis at St George's church, Wembdon, bringing to a close the Shepherd family chapter at Model Farm.
