Pebbles and Pathways — a rather fitting soundtrack for an evening stroll around Rudge Farm.

Just before the sun disappears, when the light gets low and golden and the pathways through the grounds are at their very best.

The heart of our cottages — the main courtyard.

Our cottages sit together in a beautiful horseshoe, with the courtyard in the middle leading straight down towards the lower meadows. It’s a lovely communal space for barbecues, children playing and families spending time together, while everyone still has the privacy of their own individual cottage.

Definitely one of our favourite spots on the farm… and apparently our chickens’ too. They’re regular visitors.

Dear Mr Rudge,

(a little 40th birthday surprise awaits. Keep swiping →)

A very, very happy birthday from all of us at Rudge Farm.

For such a special birthday, it felt only right to give you something equally special — although admittedly, these presents may take a few hundred years to reach their full potential.

This year, you’ve been gifted two phenomenal trees that have been on your wish list for many, many years: a magnificent Cedar of Lebanon and a Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum).

There is something incredibly special about planting a tree that you know will outlive you — not by years, but by centuries.

We have always seen ourselves as custodians of Rudge Farm. It isn’t simply somewhere we bought, or somewhere we happen to live. It is a little piece of the world that has been entrusted to us for a while. Our job is to love it, nurture it, improve it where we can, and eventually leave it behind for the generations who come after us.

These two trees embody that perfectly.

Today, on your 40th birthday, they are young enough for us to stand beside them. Over the coming decades, our children will watch them tower above us. Their children will sit beneath their branches. And hopefully, our great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandchildren will know these enormous trees simply as part of the landscape of Rudge Farm — perhaps never quite comprehending that all those generations ago, we were the ones who put their roots into the ground.

One day, long after we are gone, they will still be here. And I think there is something rather beautiful about that.

Keep swiping right to watch these incredible trees grow — from the trees we’ve planted today, to the giants they could become in 10, 20, 40, 80 years and far, far beyond.

Happy 40th birthday, Mr Rudge. Here’s to putting down roots, watching them grow, and leaving something beautiful behind for generations to come.

Such a wonderful writing retreat for Tess and her lovely sister, who joined us at Rudge Farm as part of our feature in Good Housekeeping UK Good Housekeeping magazine.

It was so lovely to capture a few little memories of their time here together — writing, unwinding and enjoying the peace of the farm.

Family holidays at the farm

The kind of memories that deserve to be captured.

This wonderful family comes back to Rudge year after year, and they are always an absolute blast to have here. Watching families return, the children grow, and new memories being made each time is something really rather special.

Same farm, another summer, a whole new set of memories.

Blossoms and bank holidays… the most beautiful combination.

It’s been a wonderfully busy day here at the farm, full of cottage changeovers, fresh arrivals, and that lovely sense of everything coming to life again.

And now, as the day winds down, there’s a quiet moment to pause, take it all in, and appreciate just how special this place truly is.
