Meet the Family // Karen and Bill bought Broad Road Farm in 2000. At the time, the farm was in a derelict state, and their first priority was refurbishing the homes so they could raise their sons, Edward and George. Over the years, the farm grew into a place where family gathered, celebrations were shared, and a true labour of love took shape. Trees were planted, gardens were nurtured, and the land slowly came to life, welcoming wildlife along the way.In 2009, they launched Broad Road Farm Holiday Lets (try saying that ten times fast!). Old barns were carefully converted into gorgeous, rustic-luxury self-catering cottages. Karen ran the business herself for ten years, right up until the lockdown in 2020. At that time, their eldest son Edward was working abroad as a professional dancer. He returned home to quarantine on the farm with his partner, Dom, while George, the youngest, was working as a site carpenter. Being home for the longest stretch since he was sixteen, Edward began to see how challenging it had become for his parents to maintain the farm alone. After more than twenty years of building it up, thoughts of selling began to surface.Instead, Edward saw an opportunity, one last chance to take the farm further and turn it into a true destination.
Outbuildings was born.
Edward and Dom worked tirelessly to build an online presence, while Edward and George began designing new and exciting spaces. In 2021, they launched The Coop, the catalyst for everything you see today. Edward’s designs came to life through George’s expert craftsmanship, while Dom led the guest experience. Karen and Bill remain very much part of daily life on the farm. You’ll often find Bill in the gardens with one of the farm dogs, and Karen helping out wherever she’s needed. The whole family still lives on-site.What began as a small project to keep the farm going has grown into a fully realised vision: a unique collection of cabins, huts, and rooms, alongside a bar and dining space that celebrates the very best of homegrown and local flavours, as well as unique on-site experiences. Today, Edward is the visionary, George the maker, and Dom the host, supported by a wonderful local team.
