The earliest record of the building is from the ledger book c1300 as a property owned by one John King. By 1584 the property was known as "Kings" and included a brewhouse and yards. Although the property was extended in the 19th century with the addition of the East & West wings, some of the original beams are still to be seen. Ye Olde Swan is a good example of the increase in property values. It was mortgaged for £400 in 1781, sold for £750 in 1830 and for £1,850 in 1895. (in 1789 it was let for £10 per year).

𝐀 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝 🦢

After 27 incredible years, we are officially announcing our retirement as landlord and landlady of Ye Olde Swan.

What began as a new adventure quickly became our home, a cornerstone of our lives, and the heart of a community we’ve been so proud to be part of.

Through the laughter, the joy, and the tears, The Swan has been with us every step of the way. It’s where we’ve celebrated life’s milestones, weathered its challenges, and shared unforgettable moments with friends old and new.

These walls have seen it all, holding the memories not just of our family, but of everyone who has passed through our doors.

As we prepare for this next chapter and embrace retirement, we want to let you know that we don’t yet have a confirmed date for when we will officially hand over the reins. But we will keep you updated and look forward to sharing this transition with you all.

The Swan will forever be a part of our family’s story—its legacy is woven into who we are and always will be.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey. Your kindness, loyalty, and friendship have meant the world to us. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for making The Swan our home.

The Motley Crew celebrates its silver (25th) anniversary this year! Our first gig in 2024 takes place this Friday - February 2 - in Brightlingsea's Ye Olde Swan at 7.30. We'll be raising money for Brightlingsea WinterFest, and if past gigs are anything to go by, it will be a busy, fun night. Get there early!
