The birds are still laying well despite the heat.
These are our ‘roll away’ nest boxes - once a bird has laid her egg the egg rolls into a collection tray, this keeps the eggs clean and stops them from being pecked.

Keeping the chickens cool in hot weather is really important for their welfare and egg production. These are the things that we’ll be doing during this week’s heatwave:

- Adding electrolytes to the chickens’ water to keep them hydrated. The sweet flavour encourages them to drink more water.

- Making sure the chickens have access to shade - the raised shed means they can find shade under the house or alongside it.

- Keeping the service door of the shed open to help with airflow during the day.

The shed is designed and built with a mesh floor and vents in the roof which creates a chimney effect - this keeps the birds cool at night.

We will also be keeping a close eye on the flock as always to make sure the girls are as comfortable as possible.

At the end of last year, we made the decision to sell most of our sheep flock. After a particularly dry summer, we realised that we couldn’t carry on trying to make the sheep work, and gave up our rented land.

We are now focussing on producing pasture raised eggs and selling them locally.

We have built a mobile chicken shed which is moved on to fresh grass twice a week, ensuring the birds have access to bugs and worms.

This system, we believe, is the best for the welfare of the birds and produces the best eggs.

It also means that we can farm in a way that doesn’t rely on renting land, as we can use the relatively small amount that we have at home.

We still have a few sheep and will be integrating them into our system going forward but, for the time being, we are primarily focussing on the chickens.

We currently have the ram out with the ewes and, all being well, should have lambs by mid April. We tend to put the ram out in to the field with the ewes later than most because we want our lambs born later on in the year. As we lamb outdoors, it’s preferable to have warmer weather and a bit more light to give the lambs the best chance of survival.

Last week one of our ewes was attacked by a dog. We haven’t had an incident like this for some years now, but unfortunately livestock worrying from dogs isn’t uncommon for farmers.

The mere presence of a dog in a field can cause unrest within the flock and chasing can cause high levels of stress for the animals. In the case of pregnant ewes, this can result in abortion.

The ewe in the picture seems to be making a good recovery and has now been reunited with her flock after being patched up, given some pain relief and spending a few days inside.

Fortunately the bites to the back of her neck seem to be superficial but in cases such as these there is always the risk of death from shock a few days after the incident.

We found the attack had happened on our daily round and so it’s possible that the ewe had been in this state for some time. Sadly, the owners of the dogs rarely report these incidents.

Although footpaths are for everyone to enjoy, we kindly ask that they are kept to and that dogs are kept on leads around livestock.
