We currently have the ram out with the ewes and, all being well, should have lambs by mid April. We tend to put the ram out in to the field with the ewes later than most because we want our lambs born later on in the year. As we lamb outdoors, it’s preferable to have warmer weather and a bit more light to give the lambs the best chance of survival.

We’ve been battling the mud (and wind) today loading and moving lambs onto new ground. After a bit of a slow spell, the lambs are growing on well and we’ll be taking the first batch in for lamb boxes in the new year. If you are local to us and interested in a box, please just get in touch and we’ll add you to the list!

Last week one of our ewes was attacked by a dog. We haven’t had an incident like this for some years now, but unfortunately livestock worrying from dogs isn’t uncommon for farmers.

The mere presence of a dog in a field can cause unrest within the flock and chasing can cause high levels of stress for the animals. In the case of pregnant ewes, this can result in abortion.

The ewe in the picture seems to be making a good recovery and has now been reunited with her flock after being patched up, given some pain relief and spending a few days inside.

Fortunately the bites to the back of her neck seem to be superficial but in cases such as these there is always the risk of death from shock a few days after the incident.

We found the attack had happened on our daily round and so it’s possible that the ewe had been in this state for some time. Sadly, the owners of the dogs rarely report these incidents.

Although footpaths are for everyone to enjoy, we kindly ask that they are kept to and that dogs are kept on leads around livestock.

Our first batch of free range chickens are now ready to be ordered and will be available for collection from Collins Farm this Saturday (26th). Our chickens have been free to roam on pasture throughout their lives and have been reared to the highest welfare standard. The chickens will be oven ready and range between 2 - 3.5kg (a standard supermarket chicken is around 1.8kg). Price per kg is £9. If you would like to order a chicken, please get in touch and we will reserve you one. Numbers are limited so order soon to avoid disappointment!

Still one of our favourite recipes - breast of lamb 👌.

We’ll be sending out another batch of our lamb and mutton boxes tomorrow - the last of this season’s, but will have boxes available again in the Autumn. Please do get in touch if you’d like to be added to the waiting list.

We’ve decided to experiment with some of the mutton this time, mincing it and making burgers. If it’s a success, these will be available for locals and visitors to the holiday lets to buy, so we’ll keep you posted!

In the next few days we’ll be putting the ram in with the ewes.

This is a bit later than some of the other farms we know but, as we lamb outside, we want the lambs born when the weather is milder, later on in the Spring.

We’ll be using the same ram as last year because we’re not tupping any of the ewe lambs. Normally we’d use a different ram every year to avoid inbreeding, but this year’s conditions mean that the ewe lambs aren’t quite ready.

Here’s Fred checking on some of the ewes with Charlie - he’s been helping to deliver the last of this year’s lamb and mutton boxes this afternoon too.

On Tuesday 22 November we’ll be heading to the Beaufort Christmas Fair with our blankets.

This will be our first time as stall holders and, of course, it’d be lovely to sell some of the blankets, but mostly we’re looking forward to putting Collins Farm out there a bit more.

We’re hoping to be able to talk to people about what we do - both the sheep side of things and the holiday lets - and hopefully meet lots of other small businesses like ours.

If you’re heading to the fair, please come and say hi!
