A big treat this week - a cruise on the Waverley, the world's last seagoing paddle steamer. She's beautiful, and so was the weather! We had a fantastic trip from Kyle to Portree, then around Raasay and the wee islands in the Inner Sound. Not only that, but the children from our local primary in Broadford were on board and sang some songs to celebrate their school's 50th anniversary. A totally unforgettable day. ☀️❤️

This week's outing to the Trotternish Ridge. It was just astonishing - sunshine, no wind, and utterly peaceful. I had a nice chat with a local crofter up Glen Hinnisdal but apart from that it was just me and the eagles.

Plenty of baking going on just now. The summer weather hasn't been great for using the wood-fired oven, but we invested a brand new indoor one which has kept the resident baker happy. This batch is an organic white and spelt sourdough.

A new line of sourdough here at Otter Lodge. It's made with Scottish wholewheat flour from Mungoswells Malt & Milling down in East Lothian.

This summer we had a visit from BBC filmmaker and Global Underwater Explorers NextGen Scholar, Harry Gunning. It was great to be able to dive with him and we were pretty chuffed when he made this short film about the anemone monitoring project we set up in Loch Alsh.

There are orchids EVERYWHERE this year. There are plenty in our meadow, but they've also popped up in our herb bed and under our washing lines, which makes doing the laundry a delicate business.

Here on Skye there's is still a little bit of peat cut locally for domestic use. Peatlands are ecologically and environmentally important, but the scale of cutting here is very limited these days. First the sedge and plants on the surface are husked away; then a tairsgear, a long wooden handle with a blade at the end, is used to cut and turn the peat. They're left out to dry on the hill for a bit before collection and stacking at home. We don't burn peat, but there are a few folk that rely on it still, and it's famously used to flavour some our island whiskies.
