Businesses coming together to make New Forest roads safer 🚗🐴

Road safety campaigners across the Forest are calling on local businesses to join forces in a new initiative - New Forest Drive Safe - aimed at promoting safer driving and protecting the Forest’s iconic free-roaming animals.

Every year many ponies, cattle and donkeys are sadly killed or injured on New Forest roads. So far this year there have already been 62 accidents involving animals, with 36 livestock killed or injured. These tragedies can happen to anyone, at any time of day or night and they’re especially common during the darker winter months.

That’s why we are joining with the Real New Forest - CDA, New Forest - Forestry England and New Forest Roads Awareness to launch New Forest Drive Safe.

The campaign invites businesses with staff who drive in the Forest to sign up and show their support for safer driving.

✅ It’s completely free to join
✅ Participants can receive advice and materials to help raise awareness among staff
✅ Business will be listed on the CDA website
✅ It’s a simple but powerful way to demonstrate your care for the community, the animals and the unique New Forest landscape

Signing up is simple - visit the New Forest CDA website and search for 'New Forest Drive Safe' to register your business.

And remember:
🐴 Drive carefully near Forest animals
🚗 Slow down and stay alert, especially in the dark
📞 Report any accidents involving animals to the police within 24 hours

, Commoners Larder and Camping in the New Forest are among the businesses already proudly supporting this campaign.

NEW FOREST PANNAGE SEASON 2025

A heavy acorn crop is expected this year, and therefore Forestry England and Verderers have agreed that the pannage season will commence on Monday 15th September. Unless an extension is agreed, the pannage season will end on Friday 28th November.

Pannage is the practice of turning out domestic pigs in a wood or forest in order that they may feed on fallen acorns, beech mast, chestnuts or other nuts. Historically, it was a right or privilege granted to local people on common land and it is still an important part of the New Forest’s ecology. It helps the husbandry of the other New Forest livestock – pigs can safely eat acorns as a large part of their diet, whereas excessive amounts are poisonous to ponies and cattle.

Owners of property abutting the Forest are reminded that it is their responsibility to fence out Forest animals from their land. Fences that keep ponies and cattle out will not necessarily be adequate to stop pigs.

Commoners who wish to exercise their right of pannage are reminded that they must arrange for their Agister to inspect, mark their pigs at least 14 days before they turn them out.

For further information regarding the pannage season, please contact the Verderers’ office at The King’s House, Lyndhurst, Hampshire, SO43 7NH or telephone 02380 282052.
