Taken on the A9 near Conon Bridge, these two men are taking part in a walking race from John o' Groats to Lands’ End. The walk, which attracted over 700 entrants, was sponsored by holiday camp entrepreneur, Billy Butlin. The first man and woman to reach the finish line each won £1,000. To put that in context, the average cost of a house in the UK in 1960 was around £2,500.
Adverse weather in Caithness resulted in more than 150 competitors dropping out before the first day was over. Fewer than 200 of the competitors arrived at Lands' End within the 28-day cut-off period.
