The secret to a 50-year-old garden? 200 tonnes of elephant dung

Before we opened in 1976, the gardens needed bringing back to life, and some very large friends helped out. Around 200 tonnes of elephant manure went into fertilising the grounds. Our Long Borders were first designed by the celebrated garden designer Norah Lindsay and later replanted to a scheme by landscape designer Russell Page. They're still a highlight of the estate today. Now that's what we call natural fertiliser!
