Thanks for all the positivity and support for The Bushmills Barracks project as we attempted to engage with the Historical Environmental Division (responsible for approving alterations to Listed building or in this case an extension).

Unfortunately a very disappointing outcome. Frustrating to discover that HED had not even read our detailed response (attached) submitted 4 weeks ago addressing their concerns. We believe all their concerns were clearly addressed in the document particularly referencing their own Policy Statements, Bushmills Conservation Area documents and highlighting precedent. We are advised its ‘case by case’ so is it just luck? As HED is a direct Stormont responsibility, and with our MLA’s on paid leave, we have no political recourse !.

This is all even more frustrating as the building was listed by the government shortly after purchase by ourselves. The Plans appear to be acceptable to the Conservation Area requirements but the visionary building envisaged behind but linked to the historic Police Station essential to the project’s sustainability is now, thanks to the HED, dead in the water.

We are currently reviewing our options across the board and in Bushmills generally but we hope todays outcome does not deter future development of some 80 derelict buildings in Bushmills and detract from the Vision of the 2020 Village Plan.

Tomorrow is an important day for the The Bushmills Barracks project, we meet the Historical Environment Division for the second and final time!
Looking at the attached criteria laid out in their policy document we believe we tick all the boxes ...... let’s see what they say!

Despite the constraints imposed by the HED in response to our application we are ploughing ahead with design concepts and ideas in a positive fashion and have responded point by point to the concerns of the Historic Environment Division.
Although the building was listed after we purchased, anyone that knows us will appreciate our support for conservation preservation and sympathetic design. Our plans include a new build in reclaimed brick to the rear with a glazed link, minimal affect on the original building but this appears not to be acceptable to them.
Our response has referenced Bushmills Conservation documents, precedents & the current policies relating to listed buildings and their settings. We shall wait & see!!

If you're imagination can erase the fencing, cameras & signs you can see what wonderful original features this building has. This building was constructed in 1939, a two-storey five bay neo-Georgian style barracks. Thomas Francis Rippington designed a standard which was used for a series of barracks for the newly formed RUC between 1922 to 1950.

THE former Bushmills police station looks set to be transformed into tourist accommodation, The Irish News can reveal.
