Dál Riata Distillery

Dál Riata Distillery With the birth of Dál Riata Distillery, the legendary whisky region of Campbeltown is set to experience a distilling renaissance not seen for over a century.

Dál Riata Distillery will have the capacity to produce 850,000 litres of spirit per annum creating a spirit and whisky fitting to the style and traditions of Campbeltown Previously known as the capital of the whisky world, in the mid 1800s Campbeltown boasted over 25 distilleries, until a dramatic decline during the 1920s - by 1929 the town had only two operating distilleries. The name Dál Riata

is derived from the ancient kingdom that existed on the Western coast of Scotland and Northeast Ireland between the 6th & 9th Centuries. Dál Riata Distillery will have the capacity to produce 850,000 litres of spirit per annum and will utilise locally grown barley from Dunadd Hillfort; this area, near Lochgilphead, was the capital of the Dál Riata kingdom and will be inspiration for creating a spirit and whisky fitting to the style and traditions of the region. Plans have been submitted for the distillery, which will be located on Kinloch Road overlooking Campbeltown Loch, by Bowman Stewart Architects of Lochgilphead. The distillery will aim to enhance the area and work within the Campbeltown Conservation Area scheme. The Still House will incorporate curtain-wall glazing with a viewing balcony providing sweeping views of the Loch and bay. In addition to the distillery, a retail and visitor’s centre will be situated on Longrow, adjacent to the distillery.

🚜“Where will you guys be growing your barley?” I hear you ask, well we’ll be growing a lot of it near here in Kilmartin Glen, Achnabreck renowned for its stunning and intricate rock carvings.🌴

🌎These exceptional artworks, thought to date back to the Neolithic or early Bronze Age, span a remarkable timeline of 4,000 to 6,000 years. The carvings feature circular indentations and captivating concentric circles that stretch across a large rock face, with some designs reaching an impressive diameter of nearly 1 meter 🪐

🌗Achnabreck is enveloped by a stunning landscape rich in prehistoric structures, lending it an aura of intrigue. While it is speculated that these carvings may have held important ritualistic or territorial significance, the true intent behind their creation remains elusive. The intricate patterns, coupled with the site’s deep historical roots, continue to fascinate both archaeologists and visitors alike, beckoning them to delve into the enthralling narrative of our ancient heritage🌓

We've been quiet on here recently, but everything is going to plan. We have a few bats we have had to find lovely new homes for. Their palatial new palace will be ready for them soon.

Did you know the female bat eats over 3,000 midges a night? We love the bats. 🦇

Meanwhile, this book is cracking - buldging with terrifc local info.

Thank you

Thank you

J. & A. Mitchell & Co. Ltd. would like to congratulate both Witchburn Distillery and Dál Riata Distillery on their recent planning permission success from Argyll & Bute Council. With the new Machrihanish Distillery in progress too, the future is looking bright for Campbeltown whisky!

In another exciting development, planning permission has been granted for J&A Mitchell's new Bottling Hall and Dispatch Facility which will be located on the grounds of Glengyle Distillery. We plan to break ground for this project in the near future.

🥂 Dal Riata Distillery Ltd has been awarded planning permission by Argyll & Bute Council to build a new distillery called ‘Dal Riata’ on the banks of Campbeltown Loch. The development will be mixed use, featuring a Distillery, museum, visitor centre and retail outlet.
🥃
The £4.5 million investment into this independent venture will provide employment for around 20 local people, and Dal Riata Distillery Ltd has pledged to provide trainee positions for those seeking a career in the burgeoning Scotch Whisky industry.
🥃
The name ‘Dal Riata’ (The Kingdom of Alba) was used during the 6th and 7th Centuries and encompassed an area including Argyll, Kintyre, Islay, Jura, Mull, Ardnamurchan, Cowal and a northeast corner of Ireland. The capital of Dal Riata was Dunadd Fort, where the new distillery intends to grow the barley for their own single malt Scotch Whisky.
🥃
The vision behind the creation of Dal Riata comes from two long-term whisky enthusiasts Iain Croucher who is founder and owner of independent whisky bottlers North Star Spirits, and successful business entrepreneur Ronnie Grant.
🥃
Dal Raita Distillery Director Iain Croucher said “To be working within Scotch Whisky is beyond a blessing. The ladies and gents that came before who created such as strong and powerful industry, which we are now custodians, comes with great responsibility. We must preserve this vital global asset for future generations to enjoy and thrive”.
🥃
Dal Raita Distillery Director Ronnie Grant said “Gaining planning permission is a massive step forward in fulfilling our dream to bring a new distillery to Campbeltown. We have been humbled by the positive reaction we have received from both local people and the wider whisky community. Campbeltown is a special little place which is certainly on the up and we can't wait to become a part of its bright future."
🥃
Charlie Maclean MBE, Master of the Quaich said ““Campbeltown holds an important and special place in the history of Scotch Whisky. Two hundred years ago, some 25 distilleries were producing 748,000 gallons (3.5 million litres) of spirit according to The Imperial Gazetteer of Scotland. In recent times the number of operating distilleries has significantly dwindled, but the news that The Dal Riata Distillery has been granted planning permission is splendid. Iain Croucher and his team know their whiskies. This they have proved by winning the title ‘Independent Bottler of The Year’ on more than one occasion. I have every confidence that The Dal Riata Distillery will produce magnificent liquid worthy of carrying forward Campbeltown’s legacy to a new generation of whisky lovers”
🥃
As Campbeltown soars in popularity amongst tourists, Dal Riata’s owners seek to pay homage to the history of Campbeltown by incorporating a museum within the visitor centre dedicated to telling the story of the town’s long and proud association with whisky distillation.
🥃
The distillery will feature an impressive glass frontage enabling views of the two large copper stills as they distil whisky. A raised balcony will offer spectacular views of Campbeltown Loch, whilst acting as a premium event and tasting space.
🥃
A vacant shop on Longrow that presently adjoins the site will be developed into a visitor centre and conference and tasting room. Space is being incorporated within the proposed distillery building to enable production expansion without any need to extend the existing footprint.
🥃
The long-term plan for the distillery includes building a warehouse at Machrihanish Airport for cask storage. It is envisioned that this facility will also include bottling and storage facilities for private clients.
