From 1866 to 2026 Still at the Heart of Cardiff

Opened in 1866 The Royal Hotel Cardiff has welcomed guests through the Victorian era two world wars and more than a century of change.

Long before Cardiff became the capital of Wales this historic hotel was already a city landmark welcoming travellers arriving by horse drawn carriage.

Across three centuries generations of guests have celebrated milestones shared stories and rested at the heart of the city as Cardiff grew from a busy port town into the vibrant capital it is today.

As 2026 begins the doors remain open to new memories familiar faces and first time visitors. Thank you to everyone who continues to be part of a story that started in 1866. Here is to the year ahead and many more to come 🥂

“The Royal did Good
Convenient, comfortable and central Cardiff. You can’t ask for more but you get it.
The superior rooms are spacious, well furnished and equipped. Super comfortable bed and nice lined and towels.
The staff here are friendly, helpful and it was great to see them smiling
The breakfast was delicious and the the waiting staff helpful and polite.
It was quite refreshing to stay in a central Cardiff hotel were I felt like a guest not just another income unit. The wine in the room was very welcome as was the bar reduction voucher.
Well done the Royal.”

Great hotel with excellent location
Very hospitable hotel with friendly staff. The room was lovely, clean, and had everything we needed. We had breakfast here each morning during our stay, and it was very good. The location was perfect, near the station, few minute walk to the castle and central to shops and restaurants. We used the bar one evening, it was comfortable and quiet.
We would definitely stay here again.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 "Lovely hotel! An old historic building that has been beautifully maintained and decorated. My room was spotless and extremely comfortable. The location is perfect for the city centre and the station.

The staff were warm and friendly, and I felt very safe as a lone female business traveller. Breakfast was excellent with lots of choice – and even the croissants tempted me, which is rare for me!"

*"A huge thank you to all the staff, what a beautiful hotel! After a busy night, I was so glad to arrive back at The Royal Hotel to chill out. From the lovely Reception team to the spotless room, everything was just perfect. Breakfast was stunning — a full English cooked to perfection plus juices, fresh bread, croissants, cakes, cheese and more.

The room had air conditioning, a fan, hairdryer, ironing board, safe, kettle with complimentary tea, coffee, hot chocolate (yummy!), plus plenty of soft towels and toiletries. The bed and pillows were so comfortable. I also enjoyed relaxing in the cosy bar with its reasonable prices.

From the first hello at reception to the last goodbye, everything was perfect.

In the heart of the city, the location is steps away from Cardiff Central Train Station, the Principality Stadium, Cardiff Castle, and St David’s Shopping Centre.

Breakfast was amazing, in the historically themed Captain Scott Room.
