The Tranquil Otter is a nature reserve with the Lough at its heart. We have eight log cabins on the edge of the Lough and all south-facing to take advantage of the Cumbria sun. Each lodge is private, fully furnished with log burner, a boat and the option of a private hot tub. Picnic on the lake any day (except when windy). 🏰 Did you know there's a difference between a castle and a fortress?

Just a short drive from The Tranquil Otter, Carlisle Castle is one of England's finest fortresses-and one of its most fascinating.

For more than 900 years, it has stood watch over the Anglo-Scottish border, surviving seven Scottish sieges and playing a pivotal role in British history. It even held Mary, Queen of Scots as a prisoner in 1568.

Today, you can wander through its impressive gatehouse, explore the medieval keep, discover the Tudor artillery battery, and visit Cumbria's Museum of Military Life, where centuries of local history come to life.

It's the perfect day out for anyone who enjoys history, architecture, or simply discovering somewhere new.
