We had a close encounter with a young buzzard today. I guess the poor wee thing had flown into our balcony window, although neither of us heard the bang. He (I have no idea how to determine the s*x of a young buzzard so I am going to presume he's a he) sat there quietly on the deck as I approached him. I got all gloved up, just in case - what a jessie! He made just a gentle protest as I picked him up and then stood on my outstretched arm for perhaps 10 seconds, unrestrained, before catching the wind and soaring above the house, none the worse for our chance meeting. During that brief moment, however, he turned his head very deliberately and looked at me with those raptor eyes. I got the distinct impression I was being evaluated as a food source! Very special experience and delighted he wasn't harmed.

Creativity of a different sort - I've built a stone jetty on Loch Dalbeg! I used the stone that I cleared from the whitehouse ruin last year. Quite challenging to do the stones at the loch end. I hadn't foreseen that when the water comes almost to my chest, my arms aren't long enough to reach the bottom without getting completely soaked! Silly boy. I also failed to anticipate the fact that when I dropped a stone into position on the loch bed, all the silt gets disturbed and you can't see where to go next. Still, got there in the end and people walking the croft are already getting a little closer to the lilies.

Two youngsters from Loch Cottage enjoying their last evening on the island. Stunning pic taken by one of our guests (and posted with their permission). We ❤️ Lewis!

The view out of my office window this morning. The rain and the sun have conspired to coat everything in stardust!

Four dolphins in the bay yesterday, a huge storm overnight and then the flood this morning. So much excitement! Needless to say, no one was in any danger and the only 'casualty' was our cattle grid which filled with water.

The wild flower meadow in front of the house is going wild at the moment. White, red and sea campion, yellow rattle, sea thrift, buttercups and daisies by the thousands, white clover, birds foot trefoil, cat's-ear and vetch in full swing. Poppies and knapweed in bud but not yet flowering. There are literally clouds of moths (no idea what kind), butterflies (red admirals, painted ladies and small blues) and bees circulating. The moths particularly like the viper's bugloss, scuttling from one blossom to another, sometimes four or five moths to a stem. It's been a bit of a battle with the thistles but it's been worth it - makes me smile every time I walk up the drive.

Not a great photo but it's the first orchid of the year on Croft 6 on the first day of meteorological summer. I think this one is an Early Marsh Orchid (but I could be wrong!) - no spots on the leaves.

More Wiseman rocks. This is the natural stone arch to the north side of the beach at Dalbeg. It's an eroded basalt d**e and a magical place, for sure.

Paintbrushes in action again! This is the approach to the amazing beach at Dalmore.

An amazing sunset last night (21 May 2020), from Dalbeg on the west coast of Lewis. Strangely, red sky at night wasn't the shepherd's delight - it's pouring with rain and blowing a hoolie out there today!
