A beautiful garden well worth a visit and a VOTE.

Today is 🌸🌷

If you haven't voted already, could you please help us win the title of RHS ‘Garden of the Year’ and at the same time you can be a winner too!

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is inviting garden visitors to vote for their favourite ‘Garden of the Year’. As one of the ten RHS Partner Gardens in Wales, Aberglasney has the opportunity to be named top ‘Feel Good Garden’ in the UK and beyond, but the Gardens need your votes to win the title 🙏

Votes can be cast via the RHS website here: https://www.rhs.org.uk/gardens/partner-gardens/rhs-partner-garden-of-the-year?fbclid=IwAR0FYEQu6-nRXH2XtL1wTCIJWjSBDmjAsSpCfUKW-0xyACESn46W-iJKdsM

All voters will be entered into a prize draw to win a pair of tickets to the RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival in 2023 with a luxury two-night stay close to the showground.

📸 by Nigel McCall is one of Aberglasney’s most asked about features, our breathtaking Malus Arbor, which is blooming this week 🌸✨
The Crab Apple Arch can be found in our Kitchen Garden and it’ll soon be absolutely covered in beautiful white flowers. Its blossoms will eventually be replaced by small cherry-like fruits that last right through to autumn.

The magnificent Red Kites are often seen at Alltyfyrddin Farm B&B flying gracefully in the sky along with a number of other species. They are a joy to watch.

The Welsh Ornithological Society was founded on 26th March 1988 at a conference in Aberystwyth.

The Welsh Ornithological Society (Cymdeithas Adaryddol Cymru) is an organisation which promotes the study and conservation of birds in Wales. The television presenter Iolo Williams has been the society's president since November 2009.

The Red Kite (Barcud Coch) is considered to be the national bird of Wales.

The Red Kite is graceful bird, elegant in flight and easily distinguished by its forked tail, pale grey head, russet coloured body, white underwing patches and black wing tips. They were was once a common sight in the towns of medieval Britain, encouraged as scavengers who cleared the streets of carrion and discarded meat that otherwise would attract rats. In Wales it is also known as 'Boda Wennol' (Swallow Buzzard) or 'Boda Chwiw' (whistling kite) in reference to its distinctive call.

However, during the 18th and 19th centuries, its predation on game birds and domestic fowl led to it falling out of favour and being hunted to near extinction in Britain. Its rarity also made it a target for egg collectors and by the end of the nineteenth century, there were only approximately 10 surviving pairs, all in Cothi and Tywi valleys of Wales.

There followed a concerted conservation effort, firstly by a small band of volunteers and later with the help of the RSPB, numbers began to increase. The Welsh Kite Trust was set up in 1996 to consolidate this success and subsequently there are now an estimated 1,000 breeding pairs in Wales. Among the best sites to watch the Red Kite are at Gigrin Farm near Rhayader, at Llanddeusant in the Brecon Beacons and the Bwlch Nant yr A***n forest visitor centre in Ceredigion.
